They will participate in surgical procedures, including pre and post-operative care of small and large animal models for research.These include ensuring that the lab has all required supplies in appropriate quantities to function smoothly. They need to be personally motivated to succeed in a high-paced work environment. Specific duties include: Study Support - 30% * Maintain meticulous records and collect data accurately in accordance with GLP guidelines * Organizes data into tables and text utilizing Microsoft Access, Excel and Word * Assist with data entry of monthly lab activity into Access database * Responsible for sensitive and confidential material * Conducts research in accordance with GLP regulations * At the direction of the study director, assist in the assembly and review of study related data. Surgical Support - 30% * Participates in surgical induction and recovery of large and small animal models * Assist with complex laboratory/surgical procedures when adequately trained, including but not limited to, angiographies, endoscopic, interventional procedures, and general and cardiac surgery * Monitor animal's condition (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, etc.) during procedures and the duration on study. Research Lab Inventory Management: 30% * Oversee and manage lab inventory and create lists of items to be ordered -Create requisitions in EFS system -Receive upon arrival and process invoices for payment * Monitor requisitions for timely receipt and trouble shoot order problems * Research information needed for special order items/new products * Manage vendor information in lab company contacts spreadsheet (Excel) and in EFS vendor forms * Set up new accounts with lab vendors in EFS system * Retrieve prescriptions from pharmacy and maintain research lab drug log * Blood data entry: log, receive, QC and file in data books and spreadsheets * Package and ship study related materials (lab images, tissues, research data) following material handling guidelines * Trouble shoot missing lab or research items Lab Support - 10% * Calibrate equipment and be able to troubleshoot equipment properly * Initiate and revise lab SOPs as needed * Clean lab, instruments and equipment * Assemble instrument and packs as needed * Other duties as assigned Qualifications All required qualifications must be documented on application materials Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in a social or natural science with at least one year of experience, or a combination of education and work experience to equal five years * Must be willing to work a flexible work week; core lab hours are 7am to 3:30pm * Must be able to lift 50lbs by oneself, must be able to sit and stand for long periods * Must rotate on an on-call schedule for evenings, weekends, and holidays Preferred Qualifications: * Experience with data analysis, and working as a team member in a lab setting * Experience with conducting research according to scientific protocols and summarizing data in reports * Experience with animal models for medical research, specifically implantable devices * Experience with animal and some human anatomy and physiology * Experimental surgical skills and experience with sterile procedure * Experience with conducting research according to GLP regulations * Experience with University EFS system * Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Access About the Department To learn more about the Department of Surgery please visit: https://med.umn.edu/surgery Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
