Position Description Maintain the official chain of custody for all property or evidence of the Minneapolis Police Department. Receive, document, package and store all property or evidence to ensure their integrity for presentation in court. Deliver and retrieve all property and evidence of the Minneapolis Police Department ThePropertyandEvidenceUnitworkstwoshifts:7amto3:30pmand 10 amto 6:30pm.Hoursforthecurrentvacancieswill be determined by shift bid with management reserving the rights to change hours with advance notice. Shift bid priority is based on seniority. Salary Expectations: The expected salary range for this position is $27.22-33.08/ hourly, depending on qualifications. Work Location: This position is onsite only, and works both inside and outside in various weather conditions. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas. Job Duties and Responsibilities * Maintain the chain of custody for all items within control of the Property and Evidence Unit, using both manual and electronic systems. * Receive and inventory all property and evidence into the Property and Evidence Unit facilities using the Minneapolis Police Department's current records management system (RMS) to establish the 'chain of evidence' * Secure evidence and property from designated locations and crime scenes as assigned, according to Department Policy, generally accepted guidelines, and best practices * Maintain accurate manual and automated inventory systems and records of all property and evidence in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department * Release and return confiscated items as directed per policies, standards and procedures * Review items for disposition and record information * Dispose of items that are authorized based on directives, standards, and procedures. This may include hazardous items, blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, and other items * Perform research to determine status of cases by using available databases, contacting officers, investigators, victims, and doing general follow-up * Maintain active records and purge old records using information from the Minneapolis Police Department's current records management system (RMS), instructions from Attorneys, or direction from other Minneapolis Police Department staff * Ensure the accuracy of active records by documenting updates as necessary * Retrieve any and all evidence or property held at various locations and other law enforcement facilities using department provided vehicles * Deliver any and all evidence or property to various locations and other law enforcement agencies or partners using department provide vehicles * Accurately count cash and coin using generally accepted accounting techniques * Assist in preparation of annual auctions of bicycles, general merchandise, and jewelry * Update all dispositions in the Minneapolis Police Department's current records management system (RMS) * Operate mechanical and non-mechanical equipment provided by the department such as forklifts, people lifts, pallet jacks, carts, dollies, and other devices designed to assist in the movement of heavy or large items * Provide good customer service to internal and external customers in both controlled and non-controlled situations * Respond to inquiries from the public or other department partners, including assisting citizens in recovery of stolen and/or confiscated property * Provide internal security for workers or vendors within secured areas * Demonstrate strong conflict management skills for both internal and external situations * Demonstrate strong de-escalation skills with difficult customers * Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills * Demonstrate strong problem solving skills * Demonstrate attention to safety * Demonstrate strong time management skills * Demonstrate the ability to work as a team and independently * Strong attention to detail with a minimum of errors * Ability to lift a minimum of 50# with movement * Ability to manage situati ns when odors/smells, visual impact, or verbal conversations include blood, biohazards, and other unpleasant exposure * General light cleaning and maintenance of the facility as directed * Prepare for and testify in court as required by subpoena WORKING CONDITIONS:This position is expected to work both indoors and outdoor, in various weather conditions. This position will also include lots of moving around, bending, kneeling, and lifting Required Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or Equivalent MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Two years of demonstrated work experience performing similar tasks or duties LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Driver's License MPD Firearms Familiarization within 1 month of hire BCA - NCIC certification within 1 month of hire EQUIVALENCY: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered. PHYSICAL DEMAND: Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs. with movement Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and work elevated from the ground Ability to bend, reach, stretch, and kneel DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Certified by the International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE) REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS: You must attach a copy of your resume to your application and include at least 1 reference in order for your application to be considered complete. BACKGROUND CHECK: The City has determined that a thorough Minneapolis Police Department criminal background check is necessary for positions with this job title. Applicants must sign an informed consent allowing the City to obtain their criminal history information in connection with the position sought. MEDICAL EXAM: Upon a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening. DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING: All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.
