Fairview Health Services is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist for Point of Care Testing to cover our 3 campuses (M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank (https://www.mhealthfairview.org/locations/M-Health-Fairview-University-of-Minnesota-Medical-Center---West-Bank-east) , M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank (https://mhealthfairview.org/locations/m-health-fairview-university-of-minnesota-medical-center---east-bank) , M Health Fairview Clinics & Surgery Center (https://mhealthfairview.org/locations/m-health-fairview-clinics-and-surgery-center---minneapolis) )

This is mainly a full-time Day shift position, Monday-Friday (no weekends or holidays) but requires some flexibility in scheduling and to cover alternate shifts or weekends as needed for special projects.

Responsibilities Job Description

The Point of Care (POC) Medical Technologist is responsible for supporting the department by coordinating all point-of-care testing according to the manufacturer's procedure, CLIA, CAP, and JC accreditation requirements. The POC technologist assures quality testing and accurate point-of-care test performance through operator training, equipment maintenance and monitoring, troubleshooting, quality control, and proficiency testing and review.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for supporting the team in monitoring the proper functioning of all Point-of-care testing (POCT) at UMMC East, West, and CSC.

  • Upon successful training in all POCT and hospital-required education programs, the POCT MT will be required to:

  • Understand the theoretical, technical operation, and regulatory compliance governing all approved POCT instruments and test kits.

  • Ensure operator competency for POCT testing performed, including initial training and periodic competency review.

  • Maintain records of staff initial training and competency testing.

  • Enforce POCT policies and take actions necessary for non-compliance events.

  • Ensure that parallel reagent checks for new lot numbers of POCT reagents are performed per protocols.

  • Conduct point-of-care in-services with testing personnel as necessary.

  • Assist in managing proficiency testing and linearity studies for all POCT sites

  • Assist in managing quality control testing for all POCT sites. This includes periodic review of QC data, follow-up on any observed problems, and filing of these records in an organized manner and readily available to regulatory agents.

  • Perform frequent audits of all POCT sites to monitor compliance with POCT policies and procedures,

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and work with all testing personnel to resolve problems, questions, and issues.

  • Utilize critical thinking and analytical skills to effectively problem-solve.

  • Practice and enforce laboratory safety, follow a chemical hygiene plan and abide by universal precautions.

  • Follow established standards for telephone etiquette and maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with difficult situations.

  • Demonstrate appropriate and professional ability to communicate with co-workers, hospital staff, physicians, nurses, patients, and visitors.

  • Demonstrate a proactive work ethic and promote teamwork between departments and shifts by assisting coworkers wherever and whenever possible to complete the POCT workload efficiently.

  • Function as a Medical Technologist whenever necessary at a competency level equal to regular Medical Technologist staff. Provide safe, effective, and efficient delivery of laboratory services.

  • Mentor students and new employees and serve as a role model for coworkers.

  • Accept and perform in a timely and correct manner other duties and tasks as assigned by the POCT supervisor. This includes working early day hours and occasionally on weekends.

  • Support Hospital initiatives by actively supporting hospital-based and community functions.

May include other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA ’88.

  • Possess or be eligible to receive appropriate HHS-approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). HEW certification is also recognized. Certification is required within 1 year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology.

  • 2 years of working experience, including one year experience with POCT
