Fairview Health Services Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist Technical Lead in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Overview

M Health Fairview is looking for a Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical in the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-West Bank (https://www.mhealthfairview.org/locations/M-Health-Fairview-University-of-Minnesota-Medical-Center---West-Bank-west) . This is a fulltime, night shift position, 10:45pm – 9:15am, with 3 out of 6 weekends. The night shift is a great opportunity to elevate your skills with more complex testing, enjoy the benefits of independent work, and earn a higher hourly rate.

This position is eligible for a Shift Incentive bonus for up to $2,000, paid out every 6 months. Retention bonus is pro-rated based on FTE.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center Acute Laboratories perform clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. The West Bank Acute Care Laboratory serves a variety of pediatric and adult patients. The Acute Care team consists of 100 employees, and the laboratory is staffed 24hours a day, 7 days a week.

Responsibilities Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (MLS/MT) Technical Lead functions independently in performing all major work responsibilities of professional laboratory practice. A MLS/MT Technical Lead performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing, and acts as a resource for problem resolution and interpretation of results. The MLS/MT Technical Lead may be responsible for method development research, instrument correlation, and method validation. The MLS/MT Technical Lead correlates data based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other conditions affecting test results. The MLS/MT Technical Lead participates in laboratory performance improvement activities. The MLS/MT Technical Lead collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to promote appropriate use of laboratory resources. In the absence of a supervisor, a MLS/MT Technical Lead may direct work flow in the daily operation of a laboratory section and provide direction and problem solving skills for laboratory functions.

In addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of a Medical Laboratory Scientist, the MLS Technical Lead primarily:

  • Supports technical specialist's responsibilities, e.g., quality audits, workflow analysis, variance documentation, and personnel issues

  • Directs workflow in the daily operation of a laboratory section and provides direction and problem-solving skills for laboratory functions in the absence of a supervisor

  • Correlates data based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other conditions affecting test results

  • Functions as a technical resource for staff for problem resolution and process improvement.

  • Coordinates initial training and annual evaluation of new and current employees. Acts as a personnel resource for staff. Provides input on performance appraisals.

  • Facilitates and promotes respectful communications and problem resolution/troubleshooting for customers.

  • Develops and revises procedures; performs new method evaluation and validation.

  • Coordinates reagent inventory, proficiency testing, and instrument/QC troubleshooting

  • Ensures and promotes a healthy work environment. Promotes a culture of safety, including open communication and transparency.

  • Promotes and supports a culture of collaboration between laboratory, nursing, and providers to build a strong and collaborative team that will ensure exceptional patient experiences.

Includes:

  • Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work

  • Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing

  • Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them

  • Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention

  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs

  • Orients and mentors new employees and students

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA’88.

  • Two years experience as a Medical Lab Scientist, Medical Technologist (MLS/MT or Five years as Medical Lab Technologist (MLT) or five years Histology Technologist (HT)

  • Applicant should possessappropriate HHS-approved laboratory certification such as an MLS/MT/MT (ASCP or AMT). HEW certification is also recognized

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer BS in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
