Department: Horticultural Science Primary Work Location: UMN, St. Paul Campus Other Work Locations: RROC, NCROC, SWROC, WCROC, WROC Supervisor: Neil Anderson, Professor and PI; ander044@umn.edu Position Description This position will be based on the St. Paul Campus with frequent travel to Rosemount, MN and other Research and Outreach Centers across the state. Qualifications Required Qualifications * BA/BS in biology, horticulture, agronomy, or a related discipline with a demonstrated interest in flower or agronomic breeding and genetics in capacities of: plant propagation (cuttings, seed), plant breeding and/or genetics, seed germination, flowering, and field and greenhouse management, working with chemicals, and supervision AND one Year of related work experience OR a combination of education and work experience equal to five years. * Fluency in the English language. * Demonstrated excellence in organization, scheduling abilities, proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, GPS), written and verbal communication skills. * Ability to travel to multiple locations for research programs. * Valid Minnesota driver's license, or acquisition within one month of hiring date and personal vehicle * Ability to lift 50 lbs. Desired Qualifications * M.S.in biology, horticulture, agronomy or a related discipline. * Experience leading a research project. * Experience in statistical analysis. * Professional writing experience Responsibilities Project Management - Flax Breeding Trials 60% Responsible for the management and execution of greenhouse crossings, field trials, experimentation, and data collection from greenhouse and field trials across the state. * Manage all aspects of field trials including planting, herbicide control, shattering analyses, hand or mechanical harvesting, and seed cleaning. * Develop SOPs for harvest, analysis of flax phenotypic and genetic traits * Collect, record, and analyze data. * Ensure that research materials (instrumentation and plants) are installed and maintained correctly. * Frequent travel to Rosemount ROC as well as occasional to Lamberton, Morris and Grand Rapids ROCs. * Obtain project supplies as needed and keep financial records related to purchases. * Maintain good communication with CFANS/ROC field across the state and greenhouse crew and all collaborating project personnel. * Act as a point of contact for the project and lab. * Ensure that project tasks are completed in a timely manner. * Manage end-of-season field clean-up including the storage of materials for the next field season. Project Support - Research 30% * Support other flax research objectives (trial coordination, harvest): "Agronomic management of oilseed perennial flax: establishment, herbicide tolerance, and harvest time" project (Forever Green Initiative) and the "Sweetening the Crop: Perennial Flax for Ecosystem Benefits" (LCCMR) project as needed * Support other herbaceous perennial breeding program objectives * Assist with data collection and analysis. Supervising Undergraduate Students 10% * Supervise undergraduate workers. * Ensure that student workers complete the required safety training. * Supervision and management duties include creating project plans and weekly work lists in concert with the team * Assign responsibilities to undergraduate workers and guide tasks.
