Job Summary The Principal Systems Engineer's role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient design of systems and/or applications that support core organizational processes and operations. The incumbent conducts and/or directs the analysis of business problems to be solved with automated systems. The incumbent leverages infrastructure knowledge in the design, architecture and implementation of highly available infrastructure and enterprise technologies and produces working models of systems environments or environments similar to the Surescripts production environment. The incumbent leverages applications knowledge for the testing and evaluation of the design, implementation and performance of applications. This role tests and measures capabilities and scalability against SLA and other business requirements. The Principal Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments. Responsibilities Participate in development of strategic goals and plans for systems/infrastructure and software relative to capacity estimation, including datacenter facilities and storage solutions. Perform budget planning exercises and conduct cost benefit analysis (TCO/ROI) of possible solutions to make clear recommendations to the business. Research, design, architect, and implement new technologies and solutions, physical and virtual, based on business needs (HA, performance SLAs, Scalable) and consistent with industry best practices Guide subject matter experts and/or resources from other teams in meeting business requirements, including identification and resolution of performance concerns, and ensure communication across the entire organization regarding configuration, capacity and performance. Environment modeling and performance engineering for applications tier and infrastructure; develop recommendation(s) for modifications to applications and/or infrastructure. Work with subject matter experts on configuration design and deployment design of new Surescripts-developed systems. Integrate infrastructure builds, application development and service deployment processes. Identify performance testing required of each Agile team through design and architecture reviews, operations reviews, test plans, etc. Determine and document maintainability of new system's production life-cycle. Testing to ensure systems hang together as a whole (e.g. MQ testing). Perform load testing and adjust environment settings to establish optimal configurations. Determine and document capacity capability of an infrastructure and capacity requirement of Surescripts-engineered systems, including scaling applications Ascertain configuration limits and the impact those limits will have on scalability. Produce documentation to represent and explain configuration points. Identify control methods/models for configurations. Identify baseline of performance for Surescripts-engineered systems and methods of scaling for more capacity. Design system comparison of future changes against baseline. Define environment configurations for existing and new Surescripts-engineering systems. Document physical system footprint, including environmental requirements such as power, space, etc. Assist in support of issues impacting the performance or reliability of production transactions. Recommend/implement policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure system security through secure system access, monitoring and control. Participate as necessary in routine security evaluations. Research an recommend modifications to applications and/or infrastructure to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance in accordance with established change control protocol. Ensure compliance with policies, standards, licensing agreements, configuration guidelines, and best-practices for maintaining regulatory compliance. Ensure implementation of system configuration backup and recovery to meet specified SLA Ensure system templates/images, firmware and vendor-related patches are up-to-date. Perform standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks of all systems both physical and virtual (MS, VM, Unix, Linux). Monitor, test, and tune system performance; preserve provide reports and system log files and metrics as needed. Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure consistent provisioning, uptime, and performance. Responsible for complete automation and auto provisioning of infrastructure (Virtual and Physical) #LI-Hybrid #LI-Remote QualificationsBasic Requirements: Bachelor degree in IT, computer science, information sciences or related field or equivalent experience 6+ years of experience in systems engineering role Fluent in programming languages relevant to Surescripts (specifically Java, C#). Database and operating systems experience with Unix, Microsoft Windows Server, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server. Competent and proficient understanding of: Platforms, such as JBoss, J2EE and .NET LAN/WAN technologies (Frame, ISDN, FSL, VPN) Disk storage allocation (SAN, FC, Tiering) Virtual technologies (VMWare, Hyper-V) Active Directory, LDAP, NIS Building HA environments Microsoft clustering Message queuing (WebsphereMQ, MSMQ) Solid working knowledge of current Internet technologies, including SOAP, WS-*, HTTP, Tomcat, Apache. Hands-on software troubleshooting experience. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in electronic data interchange standards and formats, including ANSI X12, NCPDP SCRIPT, HL7, etc. Knowledge of application data privacy practices and laws. At Surescripts, base pay is one part of our Total Rewards Package (which may also include bonus, benefits etc.) and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this position is $162,300 - $198,300 per year. Your base pay may vary within or outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including (but not limited to) your qualifications, skills, experience, and location.
