The President, U.S Naval War College seeks candidates who are successful, proven academic leaders. An earned Ph.D. in Security Studies, International Relations, History, Political Science or related fields, or an Ed.D. in Education Management, Education Technology, or related fields is required. The ideal candidate will have experience managing large academic programs and leading a diverse group of faculty and staff; overseeing financial and human resources; in-residence teaching experience at the graduate level (preferably with senior and/or intermediate-level joint or service colleges) in the fields of National Security, Strategy, or Joint Operations; knowledge of curriculum development techniques and advanced distributed learning methods/emerging education technologies; familiarization with accreditation processes; competence in internet-based instruction as needed; and an understanding of the mission the NWC accomplishes for the Navy and the Department of Defense. Responsibilities. The Associate Dean, NWC-at-NPS, provides leadership for academic and administrative operations, ensuring that the JPME Phase I Program meets the standards of the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff (CJCS) Officer Professional Military Education Policy. The Associate Dean directly supervises and evaluates over twenty faculty members and two administrative staff. As such, the Associate Dean assigns faculty to seminars, prioritizes and assigns faculty non-teaching developmental quarters, and conducts classroom teaching evaluations. The Associate Dean also teaches selected seminars as the schedule allows and maintains professionalism in his/her field of expertise by attending appropriate professional conferences, conducting and/or supervising research, and by publishing in his/her field of knowledge. As the senior representative of the NWC-at-NPS, the Associate Dean assumes the responsibility of Program Manager and liaisons with NPS leadership in support of NWC-at-NPS academic and administrative program requirements. The Associate Dean ensures classroom availability and suitability and ensures provision and functionality of classroom and office equipment. Additionally, the Associate Dean is responsible for the storage, accounting, and distribution of program books and readings, oversees student registration, student performance, grading, and conducts graduation ceremonies for students completing NWC JPME Phase I. Finally, the Associate Dean is responsible for apprising the leadership of the NWC-at-NPS of any situation that would affect the successful delivery of JPME Phase I to NPS students. Candidates must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining a Department of Defense security clearance at the SECRET level. Education Additional Information The Naval War College Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NWC-at-NPS). The NWC maintains a resident, graduate-level JPME Phase I program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. It teaches traditional, in-classroom courses year-round to full-time, mid-grade military officers who are enrolled in various M.A. and Ph.D. NPS programs. It is composed of scholars and practitioners engaged in a wide range of teaching, research, and outreach. It is administered under the NWC's College of Distance Education (CDE) and maintains its own permanent Associate Dean and faculty in Monterey. The Associate Dean, NWC-at-NPS oversees and evaluates the faculty and JPME program in Monterey and is responsible for the effective, efficient, and proper operation of the JPME Phase I program at NPS. The Associate Dean will also periodically teach seminars and serve as substitute professor for faculty as needed. Additionally, the Associate Dean serves as the NWC liaison to the NPS leadership. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean, CDE at the NWC in Newport, RI. Appointment. The appointment is governed by provisions of 10 USC 8748 as delegated by the Secretary of the Navy, and the regulations of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management that apply to "Excepted" appointments under Schedule A. For the successful candidate, the initial term of appointment is expected to be four years in length with provision for renewal dependent on performance. Expected start date is January 2025. Salary Considerations. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule and NWC policy.
