Rincon Consultants Botanist/Biologist in Monterey, California
Rincon Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Botanist/Biologist to assist with biological surveys and environmental compliance documentation for projects in Monterey and the Central Coast region. The ideal candidate is located in the Monterey, Fresno, Oakland, or San Jose regions. Experience with vegetation classification, mapping, and plant taxa identification in a variety of California ecosystems is required.
Overview of Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct rare plant surveys for a variety of projects and in various habitats
Perform biological resources assessments for plant and wildlife species and describe general vegetation types and habitat conditions
Map vegetation communities and rare plant populations
Prepare botanical survey reports necessary to complete biological documentation for specific projects
Conduct restoration site monitoring
Work with biology managers to obtain, summarize and analyze biological data for inclusion in biology documents such as biological evaluations, biological assessments, and natural environment studies
Track and manage environmental compliance and regulatory requirements during project construction phases
Organize, execute, and manage small and medium sized projects and major tasks of larger projects in a progressively unsupervised manner
Provide technical direction to staff and subcontractors regarding assignments, scopes, schedules, budgets and deliverables in compliance with contract requirements
Contribute to other biological technical reports
Liaison between Rincon, our clients and their contractors, and relevant agencies to evaluate project impacts and develop mitigation strategies for rare plants, vegetation communities, and sensitive habitats
Coordinate with project design teams to review, comment on, and/or approve contractor submittals and Request for Information documents
Occasional travel to distant areas, including overnight stays
This Job Might Be For You If You Have The Following:
Minimum B.A. or B.S. in Environmental Science, Biology, Botany, Ecology, Natural Resources, or another related field (candidates with the equivalent in knowledge and experience may also be considered)
Minimum 4 years of experience successfully conducting biological/botanical surveys in California
Experience conducting surveys for species status plants, identifying plants of California, and identifying and mapping vegetation communities, habitats, and land cover types
Proficient in the use of dichotomous keys
Map reading, field survey, data collection, and mapping techniques
Familiarity with compliance monitoring during project implementation
Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently in the field or part of a team
Experience writing technical biological reports
Detail-oriented, resourceful, and strong time management skills
Familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations specific to sensitive biological resources
Ability to perform extensive fieldwork on potentially difficult terrain and during adverse weather conditions, often independently
Desired:
Experience with impact analysis and mitigation measure development
Wetland delineation experience
Regulatory permitting and restoration planning experience
Ability to review and interpret project design plans
Experience with proposal writing and development of cost and schedule estimates

The base salary range for this full-time position is$74,000-$112,000, plus benefits and bonus. At Rincon, our salary ranges are based on market median of similar jobs, according to third party salary benchmark surveys. The base pay that is actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
