Overview

The Historic Resources Specialist-Architecture is a member of the Historic Preservation Project Review Team, which is composed of archaeologists and architectural historians. The primary role of the Project Review Team is evaluation and consultation of state and federal environmental activities resulting from development projects. Each project is assessed for its effects on historic, architectural, and archaeological resources in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act, Vermont State Historic Preservation Act, Act 250 Land Use and Development Laws, Public Utilities Commission, and other historic preservation and environmental legislation. The Architecture Specialist coordinates and prepares official SHPO responses, assessing affects, recommending mitigation or minimization efforts, conducts site visits, and supports programmatic agreements. The position requires working directly with property owners, developers and housing group project managers, state and federal partners, and community officials.

Attributes for a successful Architecture Specialist including ability to work and support project partners, understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 106, ability to work collaboratively to resolve project affects and identify paths for no adverse effects, and outstanding written and interpersonal skills with the ability to build/maintain relationships, provide consistent consultation, and establish credibility.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in both office and field settings. Work involves considerable stress stemming from a heavy workload performed under tight time constraints and working with applicants who do not understand and are not sympathetic to the review process. Work involves considerable mental demands including the concurrent review of many diverse projects. Some job-related travel is required for which private means of transportation must be available.\ \ Some sites may have difficult accessibility and require working outdoors alone in all weather conditions. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
