Description and Requirements

Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) is seeking an experienced Materials Engineer to join our team. This role will focus on providing materials expertise for server development, manufacturing, and field support, encompassing metallic, polymeric, and printed circuit board materials, as well as immersion coolant. The successful candidate will tackle unique challenges in server design and development to meet the demands of increasingly faster, smaller, and more energy-efficient servers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct Water Cooling (DWC) and Two-phase Cooling Analysis and Study: Lead the analysis and development of DWC and Two-phase cooling systems for Edge Computing, High Performance Compute, AI, and Machine Learning servers. Collaborate with thermal engineering teams to ensure optimal thermal performance and reliability.

  • Materials Analysis and Testing: Knowledgeable in polymer testing, parameters, thermal analysis and interpretation. Maintain and utilize various analytical equipment, including optical microscopes, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX/EDS), and Instron mechanical tester, to assess the properties of server materials. Conduct cross-sectioning of server components and parts for detailed analysis.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Interface with other engineering disciplines such as power engineering, electromagnetic compatibility engineering, and interconnect engineering to provide materials-related expertise and support various aspects of server product development.

  • Supplier Interaction: Engage with suppliers of parts, assemblies, and materials to ensure quality and reliability standards are met. Review supplier and external third-party reports as needed to inform materials selection and procurement decisions.

  • Analytical Reporting: Prepare analytical reports detailing findings and effectively communicate results to internal stakeholders and external customers.

  • Roadmap Planning: Conduct the roadmap to support thermal solution( especially liquid cooling thermal solution), chassis, package product design.

  • New Material Study: Lead material study in area of two phase open loop liquid cooling thermal solution, such as two phase refrigerant environment impact, the material compatibility between the coolant and water loop component. TIM ( thermal interface material) material.Study the new material manufacture process to support thermal, mechanical and green package design. Study the environment friendly related material application on chassis, thermal solution and package design to meet customer or regulation ESG request.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in materials engineering within the tech industry.

  • Strong background in organic chemistry, polymeric material properties, and processes.

  • Proficiency in using and maintaining analytical equipment, including optical microscopes, SEM, EDX/EDS, and mechanical testers.

  • Ability to work in a lab environment 4-5 days/week and onsite at the Morrisville, NC location.

  • Excellent multitasking and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage conflicting requests effectively.

  • Knowledge of failure analysis and electronic component function is a plus.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
