Central Michigan University Lead Transmission Engineer in Mount Pleasant, Michigan

LEAD TRANSMISSION ENGINEER

Position Summary:

Responsible for the installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of University-owned broadcast apparatus' including in-unit supervision of other engineers as assigned. Responsible for repair and maintenance support for several TV and radio transmitter sites in central and northern Michigan. 

Required Qualifications:

Education equivalent to two years of broadcast related maintenance and repair training at the college or trade school level. Five years of broadcast repair experience. Possession of a valid Driver's License. Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, visitors, and work associates. Ability to travel on a regular basis and work nights and weekends as needed. Ability to perform the essential functions and requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Schedules and supervises the work at various transmitter sites under the overall supervision of the Director of Engineering. Maintains digital television plus analog and digital radio transmission systems, networking equipment, digital video and audio systems, computers, STL and TSL systems, plus uplink & downlink satellite systems. Operates and maintains of television and radio broadcast equipment within the parameters rigidly established by the FCC and FAA . Evaluates systems in place to ensure their correct performance in supplying RF broadcast of multicast television plus analog and HD radio broadcast. Provides firmware upgrades, software updates, and repairs to various RF systems; this includes computers, managed Ethernet switches, HD radio and television transmitters, and various test and monitoring equipment. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems involving generators, ATS switches and UPS systems. Works with other departments, supervisors, and equipment vendors to solve broadcast issues and/or problems with CMU's various interconnected systems. Maintains and upgrades software and firmware, video 7 GHz and IP based fiber optic STL's and TSL's, plus 950 MHz digital aural STL /TSL systems; this to includes the Ethernet links established on them. Programs and updates remote control systems to ensure FCC compliance with transmitter control. Provides in-unit supervision of staff in the field and prepares project work with input from staff. Oversees the construction, maintenance, and preventative maintenance activities for all television and radio RF transmission systems within the parameters established by the FCC and FAA . Performs other duties as assigned.
