Job Summary

The CT Technologist performs the computed tomography examination to produce images of various anatomical parts and systems for diagnostic purposes as directed by the radiologist.

Essential Job Functions

  • Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.

  • Collect pertinent data about the patient and procedure.

  • Reconfirm the patient's identification and verifies the physician's order.

  • Assure that the proper screening protocol is completed prior to patient entering scan room.

  • Verify the patient's pregnancy status when appropriate.

  • Provide information to the patient about the procedure.

  • Verify the patient has consented to the procedure and answers any questions.

  • Provide accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and a at a level the patient can understand

  • Analyze the information during assessment phase and determines optimal imaging parameters per diagnosis.

  • Determine whether patient has been appropriately prepared for procedure.

  • Assess factors that may contraindicate procedure such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.

  • Select appropriate shielding and immobilization devices.

  • Review the patient's chart/physician order to determine optimal scanning parameters for suspected pathology.

  • Administer contrast agents according to established guidelines

  • Obtain written consent prior to IV/oral contrast administration.

  • Evaluate lab values prior to administering contrast agents.

  • Determine appropriate type and dose of contrast agent to be administered.

  • Complete oral contrast screening form when needed.

  • Obtain optimum images during scan.

  • Reformat images as needed to better visualize anatomy or pathology according to established guidelines.

  • Send images to PACS for interpretation by radiologist.

  • Archive images to CD or data storage device as needed.

  • Document information about patient care, exam, and patient history in appropriate record.

  • Verify correct order is entered into RIS.

  • Document appropriate patient history into PACS system.

  • Document any exceptions from the established guidelines.

  • Scan appropriate documents into PACS system.

  • Complete medication reconciliation documentation per department policy.

  • Facilitate correspondence with all departments to assure procedures are done in a timely manner.

  • Work with Centralized Scheduling, nursing units, and ER to accommodate STAT or ASAP orders.

  • Maintain equipment workstation in optimum condition.

  • Perform daily QC on CT equipment.

  • Assure adequate patient care and office supplies are maintained.

  • Report equipment malfunction to service provider.

  • Implement downtime procedures when necessary.

  • Coordinate rescheduling of patients during equipment downtime.

  • Initiate established downtime procedures during HIS/RIS and PACS downtime.

  • Cognitive ability to function and concentrate on the essential and specialty functions of the job at a high level.

  • Achieve thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing an essential or specialty function of the job.

  • Ability to think and concentrate for an entire shift.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a (JRCERT) accredited Radiologic Technology Program recognized by ARRT.

  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, and sound judgment.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six (6) months experience as a CT Tech within the past 2 years or 6 months experience as a Staff Technologist.

  • Completion of advanced level exam in CT with RT(CT) credentialing.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • Current Registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

  • Advanced-level CT certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in computed tomography by June 30, 2018. After June 30, 2018, newly hired or cross trained CT technologists must obtain advanced level CT certification within 12 months of hire date.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.

  • Act 33 with renewal.

  • Act 34 with renewal.

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Regular, consistent, on-site and timely attendance.

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

  • Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
