Google Senior Software Engineering Manager, AI Innovation and Research in Mountain View, California

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).

  • 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing strategic projects, with 5 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

  • 5 years of experience working in a matrixed organization.

  • Experience with Machine Learning technologies.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.

  • 3 years of direct experience developing and launching ML based product workflows.

  • 3 years of experience with ML frameworks and infrastructure.

  • Zero-to-one experience as a Technical Lead or Manager.

  • Experience driving large projects distributed across multiple organizations and teams.

  • Experience developing/using Machine Learning models for Code, NLP, or Vision.

As a Senior Software Engineering Manager, you will care deeply about how developers interact with technology and want to drive meaningful, positive change in the developer community. This is the next frontier of AI computing and in this role, you will shape the future of the technology and how it affects millions of developers.

In this role, you will lead and manage a team with an ambitious goal. You will utilize direct technical work and be willing to make technical contributions and get things done while having a very high tolerance for ambiguity. We highly value multidisciplinary engineers who are willing to help out with whatever moves the project forward. You will possess highly developed leadership skills. You’ll be initiating and leading increasingly ambitious projects and defining your own role.

This is a unique chance to join our multidisciplinary team of Product Managers, Program Managers, User Experience Researchers, Research Scientists, and Engineers and work on AI research, building from zero to one. You will acquire practical skills in building, developing, and working directly with advanced AI technologies and turning new ideas into finished products, fundamentally impacting people’s lives.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $237,000-$337,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Work closely with senior leadership and stakeholders to define and drive the multi-year technical (e.g., research and product) agenda for the team.

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.

  • Partner closely with Researchers across Alphabet (e.g., Google DeepMind, Google Research, Labs, Core) to build emerging AI capabilities and technologies for coding/software engineers.

  • Develop the long-term technical outlook and roadmap within, and often beyond, the scope of your teams. Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and needs.

  • Contribute direct technical work as required by the team to succeed, anywhere from ideating and running experiments to enhance model performance, to E2E software development.
