Google Staff Scientist, Human Vision and Systems Integration in Mountain View, California

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.

  • 6 years of experience working in a human vision research technical environment, or 5 years of experience with an advanced degree.

  • 3 years of experience in technical leadership.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD degree in Human Vision Science, or a related field.

  • Experience in one of the programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and using a vision science toolbox (e.g., Psychtoolbox for Matlab).

  • Experience in human vision science, motion perception, and user research.

  • Knowledge of optical engineering and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality display technologies.

  • Knowledge of human vision-based models of visual perception of digital media.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively convey complex research findings to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

The Human Vision and Systems Integration team bridges human vision science and Extended Reality (XR) technology to seamlessly integrate XR devices with human vision.

The human vision science team informs engineering and product management regarding perceived image quality and visual comfort in Augmented Reality (AR). We collect insights through experiments with human participants, computational models of human perception, and experiential demonstrators. We translate the insights to system level trade-offs, technical guidelines, and technical solutions.

The Google Augmented Reality team is a diverse group of experts tasked with building the foundations for great immersive computing and building helpful, delightful user experiences. We're focused on making immersive computing accessible to billions of people through mobile devices, and our scope continues to grow and evolve.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $168,000-$252,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Lead and direct research programs on human visual perception in the context of AR, with a focus on perceived image quality and visual comfort. Challenge the status quotient for AR hardware and software system design, lift engineering constraints and change the engineering trade space by providing new human vision based solutions.

  • Lead, design, and execute complex experiments, explore novel avenues of human vision research in AR, incorporate psychophysical methods and other research technologies.

  • Apply advanced statistical analysis and computational modeling techniques to extract deep insights from experimental data and drive impactful conclusions.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams (optical engineers, software developers, UX designers) to translate research findings into product advancements.

  • Develop a long-term research direction, align research goals with the company's broader AR strategy, and represent the company as a thought leader in the field.
