Intermountain Health Genetic Counseling Assistant in Murray, Utah

Job Description:

The Maternal Fetal Medicine group at Intermountain Health is hiring a Genetic Counseling Assistant to perform clinical and administrative functions in support of genetic counseling services.

Most individuals in a GCA position aspire to apply to a graduate genetic counseling program.

Job Specifics:

  • Shift Details: Monday-Friday, 8-5pm

  • Department/Unit: Maternal Fetal Medicine

Job Essentials:

  • Assist with daily operations

  • Screen and evaluate new and follow-up referrals

  • Administrative calls to patients, healthcare providers, and genetic testing laboratories

  • Assist with coordination of genetic testing; initiate genetic test forms, transportation of samples, resolve problems with missing samples, missing signatures, etc.

  • Call out negative genetic test results

  • Assist with case preparation

  • Collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical records review, HIPAA authorizations, records release forms, and coordination of patient intake forms

  • Literature Review

  • Review and upload forms and results into iCentra.

  • Update patient database

  • Maintain tracking metrics

  • Stock testing kits

  • Screen phone calls, answer questions about the status of insurance authorization, status of genetic testing, etc.

  • Aid with the insurance approval process

  • Pre-authorizations, benefits investigation, coverage, determining patient costs, and writing letters of medical necessity.

  • Assist with creating outreach materials

  • Liaise with other hospital departments as needed in support of clinic operations.

  • Support research projects: collect data for posters, abstracts, and papers.

  • Coordinating prospective shadows in clinic

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Additional Requirements:

  • Communicates effectively, both over the telephone and in person.

  • Excellent organizational, customer service, and problem solving skills

  • Proactive, efficient, timely, and thorough

  • Works well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting

  • Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts

  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required

  • Experience working with patients and/or administrative experience in a medical office is preferred

  • Professionalism and relationship management

  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and changing priorities.

  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in a health care setting

  • Clerical or customer service experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree- BA/BS in biology, genetics, or related field

Physical Requirements:

  • Interact with others requiring the employee to communicate information.

  • Operate computers and other office equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

  • See and read computer monitors and documents.

  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$17.76 - $23.09
