Job Description

The Dean of Liberal Arts and K-12 Partnerships will provide vision, strategy, leadership, and execution in these areas. The Dean will also lead the college in planning and implementing initiatives across these areas to provide resources to support educational opportunities for students. The Dean promotes academic excellence as a supervisor of faculty in the respective programs to meet the needs of students.

Overarching Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, hires, supports and supervises diverse faculty and staff for the division.

  • Develops, maintains and stewards the departmental budgets.

  • Develops and moves forward goals, initiatives, and curricula consistent with the College's mission.

  • Focuses on student success.

  • Provides proactive collaboration with area high schools as well as area employers, organizations and key college partners.

  • Articulates with other deans on personnel and academic matters of mutual concern.

  • Determines with School personnel and justifies the need for all new positions (full- and part-time) and submits recommendations to the cabinet.

  • Prepares evaluations for faculty and staff and proactively recommends re- appointments, non-reappointments, program/professional advancement, and tenure/multiple-year contracts to the Provost.

  • Ensures effective functioning of advisory committees for each academic department and degree offering.

  • Supports and promotes a diverse and inclusive culture.

  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.

Dean of Liberal Arts

  • Provides strategic leadership for Humanities, Peace Officer, Physical Education, Reading Study Skills, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economics, Early Childhood Education, Business, Accounting, Computer Sciences, Administrative Assistant, and Education.

  • Supervises all full and part-time faculty, as well as for the daily and long-term operation of all the courses, programs, and initiatives within this area.

  • Develops long- and short-range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration.

  • Supports and organizes program review and other key initiatives in institutional planning, institutional accountability, effectiveness and decision-making.

  • Fosters a high-quality environment of academic teaching.

  • Mediates faculty/student issues, in consultation with the Provost.

  • Works with faculty on Minnesota State Transfer Pathways.

  • Determines, in consultation with faculty and in review of student needs, course offerings and teaching assignments by semester.

  • Manages faculty workloads as per the contract.

Accreditation (NACEP)

  • Provides significant contributions to institution accreditation and program accreditation efforts.

  • Organizes, coordinates and monitors on-going implementation of accreditation agendas and recommendations; and provides regular progress reports to the College and administration.

Credit for Prior Learning/Experiential Learning

  • Ensures policies and procedures are available on website.

  • Reviews information for relevancy and updates as needed.

  • Works with faculty and respective deans on student requests for evaluation.

Faculty Support

  • Oversees Faculty Support, including faculty secretarial work and D2L assistance.

Partnerships (PSEO/Concurrent/ Career Academies)

  • Works with K-12 partners to review and evaluate college offerings for high school students in general studies and career and technical pathways.

  • Supports PSEO offerings at the college, both online and on campus opportunities.

  • Develops and supports concurrent enrollment offerings (college in the high school).

  • Develops and supports CTE offerings in the high schools.

  • Develops and promotes solutions for rural school districts.

  • Focuses on the equity and access for students in the region.

  • Supports career academies and consortiums in the region.

Professional Development/CTL/Quality Matters

  • Provides strategic leadership in college-wide professional development activities.

  • Works with campus CTL leaders to ensure professional development aligns with needs identified by college faculty in yearly assessment activities.

  • Coordinates the college-wide faculty professional development days.

  • Coordinates Quality Matters/Quality Initiative Plan for online learning.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in a related field.

  • Three years of college-level experience in college-level curriculum development and course assessment.

  • Three years of teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher education, preferably a community college.

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community and/or technical college.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills.

  • Ability and willingness to travel when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in appropriate field.

  • Defined project management skills.

  • Experience with HLC and programmatic accreditation.

  • Experience working with collective bargaining units.

  • Experience in fiscal planning and budgeting.

  • Experience in delivery of courses and programs through various teaching modalities (e.g. online, hybrid, etc.).

  • Experience in course development and review.

Other Requirements

  • Occasional overnight travel is expected.

  • Extended work hours.

  • Frequent inter-campus travel.
