Job Title Student Assistant (Work Study) (SFA Gardens Environmental Education Program)
General Description
This is a work-study student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function -the SFA Gardens Environmental Education Program. Promotes a positive learning environment for K-12 grade students attending educational programs at SFA Gardens. Works under general supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Job Duties
Assists in preparing, organizing and maintaining resources and materials used in educational programs.
Assists in training volunteers for educational programs.
Assists in delivering educational programs for K-12 students and adults.
Assists in data collection and reporting about the educational programs.
Attends required training, if needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university and program policies and procedures, including safety guidelines.
Ability and desire to be in the company of children.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with children, university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to work effectively and patiently with others.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to prepare and maintain records.
Ability to operate personal computer with experience in using Microsoft Office software.
Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Required Qualifications
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for each semester the student will be working.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a camp counselor or assistant.
Experience with environmental education programs such as Project Learning Tree, Project Wild, Project Wet, Leopold Education Project, or similar programs.
Physical Demands
This position requires sitting, standing, bending, and lifting objects up to 50 lbs.
This position requires working in the outdoors some of the time, possibly during inclement weather such as rain, heat, and cold.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
