Position Description
The Police Crisis Counselor shall serve as a counselor with the Family Intervention Program/Division (FIP) and shall be directly accountable to the FIP Counseling Supervisor for the proper administration of duties. This position performs the professional duties involved in providing counseling to victims of crime, their children and non-perpetrating family members during and following crisis situations and advises police officers on the best way to handle victims of crime and other emotionally stressed individuals. This is a grant funded position that will end in 30 months. The counselor in the position primary focus will be in the 37207 zip code.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is a 24/7/365 operation. Typical Duties
Counseling victims and/or their families, including their children.
Providing 24/7 on-call in the team rotation to victims of crime in various settings.
Refering individuals or families with out-of-scope problems to appropriate agencies.
Conducting follow-up counseling on a weekly or biweekly basis as indicated by treatment.
Developing and facilitating individual therapy or support groups for youth and their family members.
Referring individuals or families with problems out of our scope of services to appropriate agencies.
Developing treatment plans with behavioral and situational objectives.
Instructing Police Trainees and Officers as to the techniques involved in crisis counseling, victimization, and handling of emotionally distressed individuals.
Performing administrative duties.
Serving as an advocate for victims through police and court proceedings.
Speaking to professional and other community groups.
Acting as a liaison between the police department and local mental health agencies and hospitals.
Maintaining confidential records and writing detailed reports.
Keeping abreast of current techniques and procedures used in handling crisis situations.
Conducting counseling, support, and psychoeducational groups.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree in a field of Behavioral Science, such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of clinical counseling experience in a mental health related setting.

LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver's License.
Must maintain certification or licensing in a counseling related field at a minimum of the Master’s level from the State of Tennessee.
Failure to maintain the required licensing or certification may result in termination.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with evidence-based treatment approaches for trauma victims
Experience with court and various aspects of the Criminal Justice System
Experience in Trauma-Informed counseling interventions
Experience in public speaking
