Position Purpose

This position reports to the Manager, Grid Research and Development and is responsible for developing, managing, and executing all specialized research studies to advance the modeling and analysis capabilities of TVA’s transmission system planning processes. The Transmission Planning Research Specialist position is responsible for leading special studies and developing the associated reports, guidelines, and training materials to support ongoing improvements in TVA’s staffing and resources for all technical studies, contractual language, policies, requirements, and guidelines pertinent to the interconnection of inverter-based resources. The incumbent leads forward looking research studies to assess the viability, risks, and opportunities for alternative transmission solutions, microgrids, grid-forming inverters, etc. The position represents TVA on industry generation interconnection teams/task forces such as IEEE 2800, IEEE 1547, etc. The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating, mentoring, training, and providing guidance for TVA staff in relevant business units dedicated to transmission planning processes, interconnection system studies, and contracting.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Performs forward looking transmission planning R&D and special studies such as stability and electromagnetic transient analysis for TVA on new technologies and processes related to integrating renewable energy. Coordinates and communicates key finding with other planning functions

  • Leads analytics and develops innovative transmission planning capabilities for power system modeling, analysis tools, frameworks, methodologies, and processes related to inverter-based resources.

  • Collaborates with transmission planning teams to conduct evaluations and assessments to identify, develop and recommend improvements to TVA’s practices, staffing, and resources, planning capabilities, policies, guidelines, and interconnection study process / requirements.

  • Serves as a recognized industry expert on connecting generation to transmission systems - represents TVA on industry / NERC /SERC integration committees such as for IEEE 2800, IEEE 1547, etc.

  • Supports the development of strategies for TVA initiatives such as microgrids, alternative transmission solutions, location based RFPs, etc.

  • Responsible for mentoring and providing oversight to staff dedicated to transmission system interconnect studies. Develops training programs to support staffing related to updates in TVA’s Interconnection Planning processes and guidelines.

  • Provides recommendations to upper management to communicate strategy involving renewable generation integration.

  • Represents Innovation and Research at various internal TVA & external meetings to discuss generation integration.

  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with other TVA organizations to allow common goals conducive to a good business environment.

  • Performs other assignments as required to ensure overall goals and objectives of TVA, Transmission & Power Supply, and Transmission Planning & Asset management are maintained.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education. – Bachelors’ degree in a technical/analytical field of study, such as engineering, science or computer science. An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.

    Experience. - Must have at least 8 or more years experience in power system analysis, with extensive experience in generator interconnection studies. Must have extensive experience in interconnecting renewable energy and storage into the transmission system including knowledge in performing powerflow, short-circuit and stability analysis with inverter-based resources.

    Certification/License, etc— Certification in pertinent field is preferred. Membership in professional/technical societies highly desirable.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities—

    Incumbent must possess a thorough technical knowledge of the principles and practices related to power system planning and modeling inverter-based resources. Demonstrated ability to lead and communicate effectively with senior management, technical leads, and executives. Must possess well-developed skills in interpersonal relations, negotiation ability, and oral/written communications. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams within TVA. Ability to develop technical reports, white papers, and other written communication for both internal and external audiences. Knowledge of python and/or other programing language is desired.
