City of Natchez Supervisor of Prisoners I in Natchez, Mississippi

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: This is a specialized classification where law enforcement experience is a benefit. It is supervisory work directing and chaperoning a crew of Inmates who are incarcerated felons. This work can also include supervising a crew of City Work Release participants who are satisfying fines for misdemeanor convictions.  The crew will be engaged in unskilled work. Work is performed independently within a limit of plans, instructions, and standard operating procedures. Assignments are routine and shall be given by the Public Works Director or his/her designee. An individual in this class may be assigned to perform anything deemed necessary by the appointing authority or his/her designee.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

•An employee in this class is required to attend and keep his/her eyes on all inmates/participants at all times.

•Supervises and attends the above-mentioned crew engaged in physical unskilled work in picking up litter,

sweeping streets, cleaning ditches and drainage structures, cutting grass and brush, washing cars, moving

furniture, etc.

•Supervises and attends this crew engaged in housekeeping and other tasks.

•An employee in this class may be required to transport inmates to and from the designated housing facility each day

•Engage in other related physical labor activities as needed.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge in law enforcement relating to the housing of inmates.
  • Know1edge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the projects to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned projects. Ability to supervise work of assigned crew and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments. 'Ability to avoid divulgence of sensitive information.
  • Abi1ity to retain respect from Inmates or "Work Release" Assignees.
  • Ability to communicate well, both orally and written.
  • Abi1ity to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The employee frequently is required to stand talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell.
  2. The employee must frequently lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school; experience in jail supervision or equivalent combination. of education, training and experience which is acceptable to the appointing authority. Licensing and Certifications: Class "D" CDL with Passenger Endorsement would be a plus if you have one.
