Northwestern State University seeks an Instructor/Assistant Professor in Hospitality Management & Tourism. The selected candidate will teach 12-15 credit hours of business courses, maintain office hours, advise/counsel students, provide service to Hospitality Management & Tourism, the College of Business and Technology as well as NSU, serve on various committees, and assist in program development. Have the ability to meet ACPHA scholarly or professional qualifications. Publications and evidence of research capability are expected for scholarly qualifications. Professional engagement and evidence of professional expertise are expected for professional qualifications. Participate in professional service activities within the college, university, or above. Other duties as assigned by the HMT Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters in hospitality or closely related field required. Preference given to candidates with experience in teaching hospitality management, experience in all areas of teaching will be considered. Ability to teach classes in multiple hospitality fields (culinary arts, tourism, professionalism, and management) is desired. Documented higher education teaching experience, other teaching experience, or professional record are preferred. Applicants should possess extensive knowledge in business, higher education teaching performance in both face-to-face and online classes. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Job Concepts

  • Teach 12-hour course load as assigned by Director/Coordinator in a manner that promotes academic excellence to the fullest extent.

  • Supervise and evaluate student field experiences, if applicable.

  • Support the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Academic Dean and/or Academic Unit Director/Coordinator in carrying out their responsibilities. Demonstrate knowledge of University, College and Academic Unit's goals and objectives.

  • Participate in all Northwestern State University functions as determined by the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Academic Dean and/or Academic Unit Director/Coordinator. These functions include, but are not limited to the following: commencement, faculty in-service, called meetings, committee work and responsibilities.

  • Maintain required workweek as determined by Academic Unit, including but not limited to class schedule and office hours; unit experiential learning activities such as Columns Café; some weekends required.

  • Serve as advisor and mentor for students and prospective students during required office hours and at other times and settings established by your Academic Dean and/or Academic Unit Director/Coordinator.

  • Evaluate students and provide progress reports in a timely manner utilizing the University approved platform.

  • Engage in progressive scholarly activities, including research, grant writing, scholarly publications, and presentations as specifically defined by the Academic Unit and/or College and within the goals and purposes of the University. Professionally represent the University, College and/or Academic Unit in all activities. Comply with all Academic Unit, College and University reporting requirements.

  • Engage in professional, University, College, Academic Unit and community service.

  • Maintain appropriate expertise and competencies through continuing professional education as required by your discipline and certifications.

  • Participate in development activities, recruiting, retention and other professional endeavors germane to the Academic Unit, College and the University. Maintain a collegial and professional relationship with the following: o University peers and colleagues; o Former, present, and prospective students and their parents; and o All University stakeholders.

  • Participate in periodic review of courses and curriculum to ensure currency and relevancy.

  • Align course syllabi to reflect utilization of established course objectives and appropriate activities and student assessments. Submit course syllabi for each semester to the Academic Unit's Director/Coordinator.

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with all state and federal laws and all University program policies.

  • Perform other relevant duties as appropriate.
