Office of Naval Research Electrician in Naval Research Laboratory, District Of Columbia

Summary You will serve as an Electrician within NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Responsibilities You will install, repair, and determine necessary wiring and circuits for electric power, lighting circuits and electrical machinery in buildings and scientific laboratory spaces. You will design, construct, install and repair electrical raceways and supports. You will determine proper size, measure, cut, thread, and bend and install rigid and thin wall conduits through the use of mechanical or hydraulic benders and pipe threading machines. You will install and repair electrical wiring, switches, outlets, panels, meters, light fixtures and switch boards distributing power and lighting circuits throughout entire buildings. You will install and repair transformers, electric motors, electric appliances, electric furnaces, electric welders, and electric generating equipment of various voltages, wattages, and frequencies. You will design and fabricate various electrical parts, using materials with the appropriate conducting, resistance or insulating properties. You will perform preventive maintenance inspections of various electrical circuits and equipment to insure proper and safe operating conditions. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision including; 1) Knowledge of a variety of equipment, material, electrical circuits and controls; 2) Ability to plan, layout and complete installations or modify and repair various electrical circuits, controls and equipment through the use of blueprints, specifications, wiring diagrams and sketches; 3) Familiarity with the National Electric Code and the use of formulas basic to the trade to arrive at proper voltages, resistance and amperage, or determining adequate size of wire, conduit, raceways, circuit breakers, and overload protection as to insure proper and safe operation of electrical systems; and 4) Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and a wide variety of test equipment used in the electrical trade.
