Position Summary/Description:

The Career Development Office ( CDO ) at the University of North Carolina School of Law is currently seeking a Director of Public Interest Advising. The CDO facilitates the career exploration and job search process for its students, recent graduates, and alumni. Each Director is responsible for providing career advising to students and managing a portfolio of career planning and professional development programs, events, and administrative processes. Directors report to the Assistant Dean for Career Development.

The Director of Public Interest Advising provides counseling and programming to inform law students and assist alumni interested in government and/or public interest work and facilitates the acquisition and implementation of job search skills. This position is full-time.

Education and Experience:

Experience in an area of law related to government & public interest. Familiarity with government & public interest career opportunities (both summer and permanent). Familiarity with North Carolina legal market. Experience in advising students. Familiarity with the academic program at the UNC School of Law. Excellent writing, administrative, and interpersonal skills. While not required, preference will be given to candidates with a J.D. education from an accredited college/university.

Must have the ability to communicate with and relate to student issues and concerns. Must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, members of the community, and alumni; ability to manage tasks while remaining personable and enthusiastic; ability to assume responsibility, work with limited supervision, and work as a member of a team; thorough knowledge of administrative principles and practices; knowledge of or ability to learn university academic structures and programs in student and career services; willingness to travel and to work evening and weekend hours as needed in the performance of duties; highly developed organizational skills and team building skills.
