Position Summary/Description:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. Student Affairs Information Technology ( SAIT ) is a multi-functional department comprised of ten (10) IT professionals providing an array of technical services supporting all Student Affairs departments, each with unique business needs ranging from support of revenue-generating businesses to direct student support services. The Director of Student Affairs IT (‘Director’) will leverage a broad understanding of how IT can support student success in higher education, and specifically within the array of functions provided by Student Affairs. The Director will provide comprehensive management of SAIT , including setting strategic priorities, providing overall project management, and supervising staff possessing a range of IT expertise and responsibility. This position will have expertise in one or more of the technical areas managed, supported, or used by SAIT , including Software Development, Server Management, IT Security, Database Management and Analytics, IT Support, and Web Design and Communication Systems. The Director serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team ( SALT ). The Director will collaborate actively with Student Affairs department heads and senior leaders to provide vision and strategic leadership associated with planning, developing, implementing, integrating, and maintaining technology and information systems that support or advance the mission and goals of Student Affairs and/or its departments. The Director will also collaborate with other Student Affairs functional areas, including Finance/Business, Human Resources, and Facility/Capital Planning to maximize resources and promote efficient operations.This position will have day-to-day responsibilities for leading large projects or initiatives and responding to priorities established by Student Affairs leadership. The Director will also serve as the Student Affairs representative on the campus-wide IT Executive Council ( ITEC ) and other committees/working groups, influencing the direction of campus IT initiatives, implementing best practices, identifying trends, reviewing policies, and facilitating coordination with central ITS .

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or other closely related field.

  • Full-time, progressive professional experience in information technology, including supervision of professional staff.

  • Experience leveraging agile methodologies.

  • Experience with resource management, budgeting, and procurement.

  • Technical experience managing SCCM , Active Directory & Group Policy.

  • Experience leveraging data analytics and dashboard creation.

  • Technical expertise in most functional areas within the SAIT portfolio.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills appropriate to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Supervisory experience leading employees with various levels of IT skills.

  • Experience and success leading IT projects.

  • Experience and success supporting or deploying system integrations that enable customer success and satisfaction.

  • Broad working knowledge of most functional areas within the SAIT portfolio and technical expertise in at least one: – Server/System Administration – Physical/VM/Cloud – IT Security – Web Application Development – Web Design – DevOps – System Integration – Database Management – Desktop Support.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with FERPA and/or HIPAA requirements and relation to IT security.

  • Strong analytical skills, including an ability to research and identify feasible solutions to division-wide technology challenges.

  • Demonstrated record of building and sustaining positive relationships and utilizing a collaborative approach to partner with team members, IT colleagues, and other stakeholders to meet business needs.

  • Proactive and self-motivated professional who can identify operational opportunities and risks and exercise superior judgement.

  • Ability to manage effectively multiple complex job duties, prioritize, be detail-oriented, meet deadlines, and work successfully in a fast-paced environment.
