APPROXIMATE ANNUAL SALARY - $35,182.80 to $50,153.76 PAY GRADE: 20

The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

The Position

Highway Construction Aids work under close supervision and perform unskilled tasks associated with highway maintenance, construction, testing labs and equipment shops. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

These positions are located in Elko and are used to maintain Nevada roads during the winter season. Crews include: construction, maintenance, debris clean up, bridge, night sweeping, landscaping, lighting and striping. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Incumbent assists in routine maintenance duties, including keeping pavement surface, shoulders, clear zones and associated roadways in good repair and assistance in emergency operations. The hours for these positions are subject to change depending on the needs of the appointing authority and may be five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts. Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform physical tasks requiring moderate strength.

Special Notes

If underfilling, one year of experience as a Highway Construction Aid in Nevada State service may provide for progression to Highway Maintenance Worker I upon meeting the minimum qualifications, with satisfactory performance and with the approval of the appointing authority.

Special Requirements

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment. Some positions require a valid class A or B driver's license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. These positions require an applicant be at least 18 years of age upon application. If selected, proof of being at least 18 years of age will be required. This announcement is for temporary (maximum of six months) positions only. Applicant must indicate that they are willing to accept temporary work in order to be considered. This position may require working alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. The hours of this position are subject to change based on the needs of the appointing authority. Typical shifts are four 10-hour or five 8-hour shifts, but may include some variation depending on the specific needs of the department. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
