Description: * The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached “as relevant” to the requisition. *Job Opening: * The Department of Fish and Game's Division of Marine Fisheries seeks applicants for a contract eDNA Field Technician to perform the following duties: The eDNA Field Technician will assist with field and laboratory work associated with a winter flounder fyke net survey and environmental DNA (eDNA) water sampling program. The position will work in collaboration with staff from with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries’ Habitat Program. Preferred qualifications include prior experience trailering and operating small motorized vessels, finfish handling, and laboratory experience. Other duties include assisting with logging environmental review data and assisting with other field, laboratory or office work for the Habitat Program and other MA DMF Programs as needed. *Duties: 1. Assists biologists in the field on research vessels and small craft with water sampling for eDNA and other field research and monitoring projects. 2. Assists with maintenance and preparation of field and laboratory equipment. 3. Organizes, filters, and archives water samples for eDNA analysis. 4. Enters data into Access and Excel databases. 5. Files and organizes digital data, including photos and videos. 6. Performs literature reviews. 7. Drafts, reviews, and edits technical documents as needed. 8. Assists other projects with research as needed and when time permits. 9. Demonstrates professionalism in words and actions and performs other duties as assigned. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Studies in an environmental science field (biology, geology, marine science, etc) 2. Experience compiling data in tabular and graphical form. 3. Computer proficiency, including a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, Google Earth, and ArcGIS. 4. Experience with operating and maintaining small motorized vessels in coastal waters under various weather conditions, including boat trailering. 5. Good physical condition, ability to regularly lift 50lbs, and ability to work long hours in strenuous situations. The job will require some work on weekends and some longer/earlier/later than normal workdays. 6. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. 7. Ability to follow through and complete tasks. 8. Ability to follow guidelines and procedures. 9. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires a basic level of physical fitness. The technician will need to be able to work outdoors in the winter months, on the water in a small boat, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This is a seasonal contract position that ends on June 30, 2025. The position is located in New Bedford. The pay rate is between $19 - $22/hour. See Preferred Qualifications.
