General Definition of Work

The City of New Bern is seeking a creative and flexible recreation professional who is ready to showcase their abilities to plan, promote and implement new and exciting programs, events and activities in our highly desirable community. Assigned to our brand new state-of-the-artStanley A. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Planning, promoting, implementing, participating in and evaluating community programs, events and activities; developing and facilitating community partnerships and outreach. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

  • Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates community programs.
  • Develops a monthly schedule of programs, events, and activities to market to the community.
  • Develops community partnerships.
  • Facilitates outreach.
  • Acts as a liaison between the department and community members; gains feedback.
  • Registers participants for activities and programs.
  • Maintains and cleans recreation equipment.
  • Oversees part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of community recreation including knowledge and proper use of equipment, techniques, rules, and regulations of programs for different age groups;
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants, community organizations, and the general public.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, public administration, or a related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must work nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Possession of an appropriate Commercial Drivers License (P endorsement) valid in the State of North Carolina or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Possession of First Aid/CPR certification required or must be obtained during the initial six (6) months of employment.
  • The anticipated start date for this position is December 2, 2024.
