Craven Community College Part-time Campus Security Officer in New Bern, North Carolina

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Security Services, the Campus Security Officer is responsible for the security and safety of the College community, remaining alert to respond to emergency situations and provide first-line response and emergency management. This position is responsible for enforcing the College's rules, parking and traffic regulations and providing other security and safety related services. This position also provides escort services and other basic public assistance services as needed. Incumbents in this position generally work alone on routine work assignments, checking in with the supervisor on non-routine assignments or when in doubt as to the correct procedure to follow. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years full-time law enforcement, security, prison environment or other closely related experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts routine security patrols on foot and by vehicle around parking lots, buildings and radio antenna to prevent vandalism, theft, alcohol and drug use, breaking and entering and be alert to any weapon(s) that may be brought to campus
  • Enforces the college student code of conduct and investigates incidents when necessary
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act
  • Assists in medical emergencies, fire evacuation, tornado warnings, bomb threats and exercise drills
  • Writes incident, medical, traffic and other related reports as necessary and conducts interviews involving incidents that occur on campus
  • Maintains daily log sheets on campus activities; provides briefing statements to on-coming officers
  • Provides escort services for employees, students and visitors as necessary; provides other public assistance such as lockout services and jump-starts
  • Directs traffic during peak periods and special events and reserves parking spaces for various meetings and conferences
  • Monitors the campus via the camera system
  • Performs motor vehicle and equipment inspections at the onset of each shift.
  • Participates in the security of on and off campus student and community held activities such as graduation, registration, parties, plays and sporting events
  • Locks and unlocks buildings, classrooms, offices and the auditorium in support of class schedules, contractors and personnel via the Keyless Entry System
  • Counsels students who violate college rules and regulations and refers them to the proper authority when necessary
  • Provide students and visitors with information regarding the locations of classes and community events
  • Provides orientations for new students and new employees on security practices
  • Issues parking permits and writes traffic tickets for parking violations
  • Participates in security training
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

Required license or certification

  • Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver's License
  • Must possess and maintain valid CPR, first aid and AED certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field
