Posting Summary
The Winfree lab is looking for a PhD-level researcher to supervise 2-5 field and laboratory technicians and run the logistics of a large USDA-funded field research project focused on forestry and native bee species in New England. The goal of the funded project is to determine how northeastern forests can be managed to support spring fruit crop pollinators and other bee species that use forests. This position would facilitate data collection and coordinate bee sampling across 5 states in New England. Following data collection, the researcher would lead data curation and analysis, including the processing of bee and pollen specimens from field projects. Specialized expertise in pollen metabarcoding and bee taxonomy is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
The candidate must have a PhD in ecology or related field such as entomology, natural resources, or organismal biology. Five or more years of experience designing and conducting large scale bee monitoring, includingfield collection techniques and in-lab processing. Specialized knowledge and training in bee taxonomy (can identify many eastern North American bees to the species level). Experience with pollen metabarcoding techniques including use of molecular equipment (PCR, Tape Station, Qubit) is required. Experience managing logistics for large field research projects, including landowner relations with private and public agencies and research permitting.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge in Ecology is required so that the researcher will have appropriate expertise in experimental design of large-scale observational field studies and will be able to train class 4 technicians in sampling techniques. Drivers license and ability to travel frequently to fi eld sites in northeastern states.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The selected applicant would assist the Winfree lab in meeting the grant objectives and timelines of a large field research project on forestry and native bee species. Their primary duties in the laboratory would be to process bee and pollen data collected during our field research using specialized taxonomic identification skills and molecular techniques. This would include training and supervising various technicians who would support our specimen processing. In addition, they would lead a statistical analysis of the data and writing a manuscript using our results.
