Overview
The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) is an integral component of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The experiment station provides a diverse range of research, extension, and education programs that serve the people of New Jersey and the urban, suburban, and rural communities in which they live. Through its Cooperative Extension offices in all 21 New Jersey counties, dedicated 4-H agents, Extension specialists, Family & Community Health Sciences educators, and Agriculture and Natural Resources agents work to serve New Jersey residents in every area of the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Associate II (Cape May County) for the Department of Agricultural and Natural Resources. Reports to the Cape May County ANR Agent, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Provides leadership and support with moderate supervision from the County Agent and County Extension Department Head in identifying and, conducting, local programming to meet clientele needs in commercial agriculture and home horticulture in Cape May County, New Jersey.
  • Facilitates the Rutgers Master Gardener Program in Cape May County including volunteer recruitment, training, and management; educational outreach activity development and implementation and identifying volunteer opportunities.
  • Assists in evaluating and reporting program impact to the state coordinator and ANR County Agent.
  • In collaboration with the County Agent and CEDH, facilitates the Rutgers Environmental Steward Program with the team in South Jersey, whose activities include: identifying volunteer opportunities, reviewing and approving internship projects, training, and participating in outreach events.
  • Assists in evaluating and reporting program impact to the state coordinator and ANR County Agent.
  • Works collaboratively with county-based RCE department staff and programs, volunteers, and organizations.
  • Expected to actively participate in appropriate departmental, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, University, and county administrative functions as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in agricultural science such as plant science, horticulture, ornamental horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, or related field, and/or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid NJ driver's license or the ability to obtain one within six months.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of program development and implementation, volunteer management, collaboration/coalition building, and working with diverse audiences.
  • Experience in public speaking, presentation, and demonstration.
  • Personal organization skills to set priorities and skilled at problem-solving.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of related work experience in horticulture, agriculture, or related subjects.
  • Preferred experience with volunteer training and management.
  • Preferred experience working for Cooperative Extension.

  • Qualtrics survey software
  • Volunteer reporting software
  • Equipment required for teaching and demonstrations: laptop, projector, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Carries AV equipment, teaching materials and demonstration materials.
  • Drives motor vehicle to and from teaching sites.
