Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist I for the department of Psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.Under direction, is responsible for managing a large laboratory having research and teaching functions and multiple collaborative projects. Responsibilities include: day to day lab management, biosafety compliance, help with NIH reporting requirements, supervision of staff and students, purchasing, communication with the research team and outside collaborators, writing research manuscripts, supporting grant proposals, data analysis, data generation. Performs complex research experiments.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Meets with the Principal Investigator to participate in the establishment of goals and objectives for the laboratory consistent with the budgetary, manpower and policy framework of the department or decision.
  • Participates in planning and expecting projects, programs using specialized knowledge of complexities, methods and probable value of results.
  • As individual researcher performs complex or novel assignments which often require development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
  • Participates in the design or modification of laboratory equipment to meet the needs of the research activity.
  • In conjunction with the Principal Investigator, designs and plans the layout of the assigned facilities.
  • Supervises the activities of the subordinate staff (such as lower-level professional staff, technicians and laboratory assistants). Trains and instructs subordinate staff. Carries out performance evaluations. Participates in the hiring process.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of grant applications.
  • Generates, compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Develops recommendations regarding budget proposals for the laboratory area. Monitors the laboratory's budgets.
  • Develops SOPs (standard operating protocols) for the lab and for common experimental protocols that will serve as reference materials for the lab.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System.
