DEPARTMENT: Neurological Disease Unit

POSITION: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

SUPERVISOR: Program Director

PAY RATE: $20.00-$23.00, commensurate with experience

Job Duties:

Observe resident attendance, mood, behavior, and degree of involvement so that facility programs and resident progress are evaluated, by noting, reporting, and charting resident behavior.

Assist in community planning related to the interest of the facility and the services and needs of the resident and family.

Develop and implementing therapeutic recreational care plans and residents assessments.

Interview resident or family members to obtain recreational information/history, involve the resident and family in planning therapeutic recreation programs, planning objectives, and goals.

Assist in developing a written plan of care (preliminary and comprehensive) for each resident's activity programs that identifies the problem/needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each problem/need identified.

Encourage the resident/family to participate in the development and review of his/her plan of care.

Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining an ongoing quality assurance program for the Therapeutic Recreation Department.

Attend facility's in-service programs, department staff meetings, individual planning meetings with Director, TR team meetings, care plan meeting, and facility committee meetings as scheduled.

Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as necessary.

Assist in arranging transportation for outings when necessary.

Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc. in submitting such to the Director.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit.

Assist in developing volunteer recreation assignments.

Assist in the development of and participate in regularly scheduled orientation and inservice training programs that relate the Therapeutic Recreation.

Assure preparing and cleaning up recreation rooms and areas before and after programs and functions.

Assist in the moving/arranging of equipment/supplies to assure that recreation areas are ready for scheduled functions.

Befriend residents to encourage resident self-esteem by visiting and conversing with residents on a regular basis.

Oversea the residents engage in scheduled therapeutic recreation programs to promote the physical, social, spiritual, and mental well-being of residents by applying experience in programs and knowledge of diagnosis and condition of residents.

Plans TR calendar events. Develops a monthly/weekly schedule calendar, based upon individual and group needs, interests, and capabilities (post where it is accessible to all residents.) Implement programs for residents/patients as assigned.

Coordinate and implement monthly special events.

Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

Must be able to relate to and work with a variety of disabilities including but not limited to the ill, disabled, neurologically impaired, and/or behaviorally challenged individual.

Ability to be flexible and willing to work a varied schedule (holidays, evenings, and weekends).

Must possess leadership ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Performs duties according to the highest ethical and moral standards and in adherence with facility's corporate compliance plan and all applicable governing laws. Adheres to the facility's confidentiality statement in accessing and safeguarding protected health information (PHI) of residents and employees, as necessary to perform job duties.

Others as deemed necessary and appropriate or as may be directed by the Program Director.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

Must possess a Bachelor Degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation.

National certification from NCTRC desirable

Must have a valid New York State driver's license.

Preferred neurological/rehabilitation experience in a long term care setting.
