System One Pathology Assistant in New Haven, Connecticut

Title: Pathology Assistant

Location: New Haven, CT

Schedule: M-F Day Shift, 37.5 hours

Type: Contract to Hire

Responsibilities:

Under limited supervision from the Director of Surgical Pathology and in compliance with all federal, state ,and local regulations, act as Assistant to Pathologist. Will report to the Specimen Receiving, Frozen Section, Gross Room Manager for administrative aspects of the program.

  • Performs gross description and dissection of tissue removed at surgery. Photographs all pertinent gross specimens and slides. Procures appropriate specimens for residents and medical students history.

  • Assists with frozen section examinations including preparation and staining of section and summary of patient's medical history.

  • Assists pathologist by ascertaining proper legal authorization and patient's medical charts; conferring with attending pathologist to identify special procedures to be utilized during examination.

  • Coordinates autopsy services including supervision of laboratory personnel. Cleans and maintains an orderly working area following each autopsy.

  • Prepares and presents at weekly clinical conferences; ensures large cases are accurately transcribed. Teaches students as required.

  • Interacts with surgical staff and surgeons to ensure timely delivery of samples from operating room to surgical pathology for tissue procurement. Assists in collection of tissue from Autopsy Unit.

  • Updates and maintains database of tissues collection and usage.

  • Prepares and provides monthly reports to Department Chief or Manager.

  • Performs other functions necessary for providing pathology services.

    Requirements:

  • Master's Degree of Health Science in Pathology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology Certified

  • Prior experience working as a Pathology Assistant

  • Experience handling human specimens.

  • Flexibility to move between sites as work warrants.

  • Preferred experience with MAC and IBM computer systems.
