Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Mine Maintenance Manager and the direct supervision of the Mine Maintenance Foreman, the mine electrician completes installations, maintenance of electrical lines, electrical repairs, and construction work in the mine. Mine Electrician will inspect and test electrical lighting, signal, and communication and power circuits. The electrician will also diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatuses and components, not to exclude other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Have an extensive level of knowledge of electrical work, and a working knowledge of most of the shop skills, i.e., electric and gas welding, black smithing, rigging, pipe fitting, machine tool setup and operation, sheet metal layout and working, heavy and light machinery repair, construction, maintenance and installation, etc.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and systems utilizing technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
  • Use complex electrical schematics and blueprints to troubleshoot and correct problems.
  • May do some painting and carpentry work, and occasionally will assist in the training those with lesser skills.
  • Assist electricians of higher classifications, or within his capabilities, work alone and direct the work of others.
  • Operate any and all plant tools necessary in this electrical work, be able to read most blueprints and have a working knowledge of mathematics.
  • May do some routing tasks such as greasing, oiling, cleaning, and inspection of equipment and attachments.
  • Be able to locate and remedy electrical trouble in most of the plants various machines, equipment, and installations.
  • May charge and service batteries both underground and above ground.
  • Keep working area neat and orderly, and tools clean and in good repair.
  • Do other jobs of a related nature as directed.
  • Perform job responsibilities with integrity under minimal to no supervision.
  • On occasion, as a matter of training, may be given tasks of a skill normally required of an electrician of a higher classification.
  • Comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and FDA regulations as directed.
  • Display positive attitudes and practice good work ethics that reflect the mission, philosophy, and goals of the company.
  • Successful bidder must be a qualified journeyman.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Normally requires over (2) to (3) years of general shop and electrical experience to qualify, or through the training program
  • Knowledge in using hand tools, electrical meter, and testing equipment required
  • Strong knowledge in troubleshooting of motor controls, drives, and electronic components
  • Ability to interpret electrical prints and schematics
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds
  • Proven attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently required

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work safely in varying temperatures in mine workplace, and outside year round
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 65+ pounds regularly
  • Must be able to wear steel-toed shoes and safety glasses
  • Must be able to work overti e as necessary
  • Must be able to work at heights as required
  • Essential job functions are performed in all types of weather conditions, some work may be performed inside plant buildings, but many are performed outside; this involves the employee to work in hot, humid, wet, dusty, cool, and cold environments - most work is performed underground.

Essential Job Functions

  • Required to work on ground level, platforms, ladders, scaffolding, hi lifts, etc.; requires the employee to climb ladders, climb scaffolding, bend stoop, twist and lift. Assist in erecting ladders, scaffolding, etc.
  • Operate mobile equipment, such as a fork truck, crane, and winch truck. This requires the employee to be able to use and understand hand signals, and have hand and eye coordination to manipulate the respective controls in order to locate and place objects in the proper place.
  • Determine job functions, procedure, and parts needed to perform tasks with little or no supervision.
  • Work well within a group, or alone, and provide leadership when working with other people.
  • Order parts as necessary for repairs, or provide proper and correct information for parts to be ordered, and have knowledge of where parts are stored and the procedure to find, and replace them in stock.
  • May be required to work additional hours as required, or even be required to come in early to perform work before the regular shift starts.
  • May be required to work all shifts at times - may work alone or with an electrician or other mechanics.
