The Engineer – System Protection is a professional position for an electrical engineer with experience in the commissioning, maintenance and performance monitoring of protection, control and monitoring systems. The engineer provides technical support to maintenance personnel in the area of testing and evaluation of these systems. The engineer seeks continuous improvement to optimize every aspect of the protection system lifecycle.

  • Acts as the subject matter expert during regulatory audits in the commissioning, maintenance and performance monitoring of protection, control and monitoring systems.

  • Develops test plans for protection and control devices and battery systems.

  • Knows how to configure protection, control and monitoring devices including supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote terminal units (RTUs), protective relays, fault recorders and communications systems. Is able to clearly document the configuration processes for technicians to follow.

  • Audits maintenance activities so that correct procedures are followed and complete records are maintained.

  • Investigates misoperation events to find the root cause of the operation and to develop corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Facilitates the restoration of damaged transmission facilities after severe weather and other events.

  • Monitors budget adherence and provides variance explanation.

  • Assists with planning and preparation for the restoration of damaged protection systems after severe weather and other events.

  • Proactively reports needed information to the manager.

  • Designs protection, control and monitoring systems as needed to meet departmental objectives.

Qualifications

Required Education, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or with NCEES Certification to sit for the FE

  • 0-5+ years of related experience

  • Step progression levels based on skill proficiency and scope of job.

  • Strong business acumen pertaining to the Utility industry

  • Strong knowledge of leading practices in system protection

  • Strong planning and project management skills

  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job

  • Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, present ideas and opinions in a respective and collegial manner

Licenses and Certifications
