New London Public Schools School Safety Officer in New London, Connecticut
TITLE: School Safety Officer REPORTS TO: Principal or his/her designee TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month position, 35-hour work week. Salary determined by the Board of Education. PRIMARY FUNCTION: To foster positive relationships between youth and school administrators/personnel. The position acts as a visible, active, enforcement officer in the school dealing with security matters inside and outside the school building. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains safety and security of school buildings, grounds and facilities

``` - Patrols campus perimeter, lunch areas, hallways, classrooms, locker rooms, rest rooms, gates, parking lots and bus stops; maintain order and security of facility; escort student to office for action as needed, report unusual activities or unauthorized persons

``` - Assist visitors to facilities, approaches visitors and suspicious or unauthorized individuals and determine reasons for being on school grounds; detain or report individuals suspected or guilty of illegal or prohibited activity according to established procedures

``` - Enforce school rules, regulations and policies for the safety and security of students, staff, cars and property. Enforce appropriate restrictions and regulations

``` - Observe students during periods between classes; prevent unauthorized departure from school premises

``` - Maintains records of contacts and activities

``` - Reports incidents and observations to appropriate school or law enforcement authorities. Works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies on violation of school policies, local, state and federal laws

``` - Observe and report student behavior to assure compliance with school rules; determine need for referrals according to guidelines

``` - Operate a communication device, i.e. radio, as designed
```{=html}
``` - Reports to administrator any building conditions or practices that interfere with security maintenance in the building or on the grounds

``` - Acts as liaison between students including utilizing de-escalation strategies when appropriate

``` - Attend staff and other meetings or in-service as assigned

``` - Able to meet the physical demands to successfully perform the essential functions of this job

``` - Performs such other related tasks as the principal may from time to time assign
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with diverse student populations

``` - Current drivers license, CPR and First Aid Certified
```{=html}
``` - Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner with students, the general public, and staff
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Civil Service or Law Enforcement experience

``` - Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Social Services or related field
```{=html}
``` - Bilingual or multilingual highly desirable
