Job Description:

Chartwells, in partnership with Connecticut College, is committed to embedding sustainability into every aspect of campus life, particularly within our dining services. Sustainability at Connecticut College is viewed as a framework that integrates social equity, environmental stewardship, and economic well-being into all decision-making processes. Chartwells, as a key partner, plays a significant role in supporting these efforts, especially in the realm of food services.

As a Student Intern with Chartwells at Connecticut College, you will be directly involved in sustainability initiatives within the dining program. This internship offers hands-on experience in sustainable food practices, operations, and community engagement, preparing you for a successful career in sustainability, particularly in food systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analysis on sustainable food practices and dining operations.

  • Coordinate initiatives such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable sourcing within the dining services.

  • Assist in implementing and promoting Chartwells' sustainability programs on campus, including farm-to-fork initiatives and food waste management.

  • Engage with the Connecticut College community to raise awareness of sustainable dining practices.

  • Collect and analyze data related to the environmental impact of dining operations, preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Support the training of dining staff and students on sustainability practices, including food recovery and waste management.

  • Participate in the planning and execution of events and campaigns that promote sustainability in dining services.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of sustainable practices in food services, including sourcing, waste management, and energy use.

  • Gain practical experience in implementing sustainability initiatives within a dining context.

  • Enhance skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting on sustainability metrics.

  • Learn about the integration of sustainability into the operations of a major food service provider like Compass Group.

Key Requirements:

  • A strong interest in sustainability, particularly within the food service industry.

  • Awareness of current sustainability challenges and practices in dining services.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire others.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to promoting social equity and environmental responsibility through food services.

Preferred Interests:

  • Interest or experience in sustainable food systems, waste reduction, or energy management.

  • Passion for creating a sustainable and equitable food service environment.
