LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of Horticultural Attendant Superintendent. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the maintenance of the landscaped grounds and parking facilities. Must possess four years of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.

Starting rate is $24.10 per hour with an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only. Rate may be increased dependent on applicants’ qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Supervises horticultural attendants and mobile equipment operators

  • Inspects finished work of subordinates for quality and completeness

  • Discusses projects with the Manager of Building Services to exchange ideas on methods to be used and to eliminate misunderstandings prior to beginning the work

  • Monitors the work of service provider in the care and maintenance of turfgrass and ornamental landscape plantings at the Downtown and School of Dentistry campuses

  • Inspects ornamental plant beds to verify plant health (full color & growth with minimal insect or fungal outbreaks) and for the presence of weeds

  • Monitors the scheduled and unscheduled pruning of ornamental plants

  • Monitors maintenance by a service provider of controllers, valves and sprinklers for proper settings and operation

  • Participates in intramural field irrigation maintenance and repairs

  • Maintains a sufficient supply of replacement parts and repair materials to respond to any failures in the irrigation system

  • Verifies familiarity with all label instructions and recommendations for the correct application method and amount of pesticide to be used BEFORE EACH USE to insure compliance by personnel

  • Monitors entire application to insure drifts of pesticide, especially fine sprays and dusts, on to non-target plants and other surfaces, is avoided

  • Hiring, terminations, and personnel recordkeeping

  • Parking garage, parking lot, sidewalk and curb maintenance

  • Procures materials from vendors

  • This is a Civil Service Position. This position does not require applicants to take a Civil Service test.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or grounds keeping.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.

Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:

Possession of a commercial pesticide application certificate may be required for some vacancies.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Differs from Horticultural Attendant Foreman by the presence of managerial responsibility and coordinative functions.

Differs from other superintendent classes responsibility limited to grounds maintenance activities.

Examples of Work

Supervises large groups of workers involved in all aspects of grounds maintenance in an agency having vast acreage, usually through subordinate supervisors.

Provides supervision, instruction and training to subordinate grounds supervisors.

Researches and prepares special management reports regarding equipment usage, cost control and other related matters.

Has ultimate responsibility for the maintenance of records and reports relating to grounds upkeep.

Performs any related duties necessary for the proper maintenance of the grounds.

Responsible for road construction and maintenance.
