Amazon Manager, Data Engineering, Shopbop Data Engineering in New York City, New York

Description

Are you passionate about working across a business to develop data products that Customers Love? Join Shopbop as the Data Engineering Manager where you can make Shopbop “the daily destination for style inspiration and discovery”. In this role you will lead a team to develop a world-class data mart. You will partner with diverse business partners to drive better results through data. Your work will drive insights that help Shopbop deliver against important goals such as: getting the right products to spark customer’s style obsessions, lowering delivery speed through shipping insights, or powering science-driven algorithms.

You will manage a team of three engineers and eight contractors who source, clean, and host Shopbop’s data mart. You will manage the team’s commitments and become a strong thought partner for partners in all departments, as well as a contributor to the strong technical culture at Shopbop and our parent company - Amazon. You will coach a diverse team of data professionals to become experts in their field. You will partner with our Principal Data scientist to curate the data needed to unlock data science and AI opportunities. You will also oversee the migration of our platform from legacy in-house and Informatica systems to modern AWS technology.

We are looking for a candidate willing to be in person at a Shopbop location in Madison, WI or New York, NY, but support a team that is remote. On most days you will work remotely arranging your hours to successfully manage a team that spans all US time zones. You will work in-office weekly to partner face to face with peers and stakeholders. You will have latitude to set your schedule and location to make this work - we support diverse work arrangements. Anticipate quarterly travel to Madison, WI, New York, NY, or Seattle, WA.

Key job responsibilities

Oversee the work of a team of data engineers helping them stay unblocked and deliver the strongest results. Represent your team with leadership across Shopbop. Act as a thought partner to business leaders, technologists, and Principal Data Scientists on how to use Shopbop's data to get the best outcomes. Set a development roadmap that delivers the best outcomes for Shopbop. Coach your team to raise the bar for Data Engineering.

A day in the life

You start with a standup call with your team to make sure work is on-track and unblock the team or provide context. You attend a meeting to discuss a new data investments and advise on how and when your team can help. You meet with an employee for a 1-1 where you help them chart their career growth. After your calls you spend time writing an short document to drive a decision for Shopbop. You round off your day reviewing your team's operations dashboard to make sure everything is working smoothly.

About the team

The teams goal is to produce a highly accurate, available, and insightful data mart for Shopbop. The team is investing heavily to replace legacy systems to make this vision a reality. We value transparency, frequent communication, and iteration over having everything figured out up-front. We love Amazon's Leadership Principals, but still enjoy the vibe of a small tight-knit team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience managing a data or BI team

  • Experience communicating to senior management and customers verbally and in writing

  • Experience leading and influencing the data or BI strategy of your team or organization

  • Experience hiring, developing and promoting engineering talent

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience

  • 2+ years of developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics (using ETL/ELT processes) experience

  • 2+ years of processing data with a massively parallel technology (such as Redshift, Teradata, Netezza, Spark or Hadoop based big data solution) experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AWS Tools and Technologies (Redshift, S3, EC2)

  • Experience with big data technologies such as: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, EMR

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $153,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $264,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
