Community Volunteer Ambassador – Stonewall National Monument

Location: New York City, NY

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

The anticipated role of the CVA will be to assist park staff in establishing and maintaining a standardized volunteer program management system. The CVA will be involved with the day-to-day tasks of Stonewall operations to provide them a deep understanding of the park’s purpose, where they see themselves fit in the ultimate vision, and how they can best leverage Stonewall’s pre-existing relationships for the overall betterment of the community.

Site Description

Stonewall National Monument was established in 2016 by President Barack Obama as the first national park site dedicated to telling the story of the LGBTQ civil rights movement in the United States. The historic Stonewall uprising that occurred on a warm June night in 1969, marked a pivotal moment for the movement for LGBTQ civil rights. Stonewall National Monument honors the legacy of the individuals who fought back against their oppression and degradation, while also inviting park visitors to consider the continued impact of that historic night in our own lives. Current volunteer programming includes the beautification of the park each Spring with the planting of flowers with Stonewall partner, The Christopher

Park Alliance. Volunteer activities also include marching in the annual NYC Pride March that occurs every June, as well as general social media support. With the opening of the first visitor center in June 2024, Stonewall anticipates an increased capacity to offer a wider variety of volunteer programming.

Position Responsibilities:

· Assist with the management and training of new volunteers, and maintain database of current volunteers, their hours, and accomplishments.

· Participate as an active team member, sharing creative ideas and brainstorming solutions for challenges with their supervisor.

· Serve as a front line representative of the NPS and represent the park in a positive manner when interacting with the general public.

· Assist the Manhattan Sites Volunteer Coordinator in developing a local policy for volunteer management which will be implemented at Stonewall, and the remaining 8 National Park Sites in Manhattan.

CVA Minimum Requirements:

· A willingness to learn and try new things

· An outgoing and friendly attitude

· Familiarity with the LGBTQ community and the challenges they face

· Ability to remain poised and calm in a busy urban environment

· Organized, reliable, and self-starting individual who can work independently

· Passionate about making a positive difference for the community

· Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in late November 2024 (date TBD)

· Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

· Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)

· High School Diploma/GED

· Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.

· Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check

• Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position

Preferred Qualifications:

· Local applicants familiar with the 5 boroughs of NYC and comfortable using public transportation

· Previous experience working with the general public

· Familiar with and has technical skills to support the use of social media and virtual platforms

· An associates or undergraduate degree with a concentration in writing/communication, history, social justice, public policy, or other relevant subject areas

Additional Information:

· The selected CVA will be given the opportunity to live and work in one of the most vibrant cities in the U.S. Exposure to the culture, foods, and atmosphere that New York City has to offer is a unique opportunity in of itself.

· The selected CVA can anticipate working collaboratively with the 9 national parks found in Manhattan, with ample chances for networking and building positive long lasting professional relationships.

· The selected CVA would not be expected to work nights, and teleworking options can be discussed with their supervisor.

· The schedule would include weekend programs, and events, but the CVA will be guaranteed at least two days off per week

· Unfortunately, no housing is available, but NPS staff are more than willing to work with the selected CVA and provide leads for potential housing options

Benefits:

· $600/week living stipend.

· $150/week in housing allowance, if housing is not provided.

· Limited health care/childcare benefits

· The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,895.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program

· $1,200 in professional development funds for training, networking, conferences, and/or travel.

· Networking opportunities within the National Park Service and partnering organizations

· Public Land Corps Hiring Authority

· Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered.
