Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.The Museum's Youth Initiatives (YI) division, with the department of Education, is seeking a part-time Animal Care Assistant to play a supporting role in maintaining the health and safety of a collection of roughly 60 live animal habitats. The habitats span a wide range of taxa used within the programs and spaces of the Children and Family Learning (CFL) department. The Assistant is responsible for basic cleaning of habitats, feeding, preparation of diets and documentation of care. They may additionally be asked to assist in the design/construction of new enclosures. The Assistant will also participate in the development/delivery of live animal demonstrations for visitors and families in CFL programs, as well as work with the Animal Husbandry Specialist to provide staff training in animal handling and demonstration methods for educators, volunteers and interns.Job duties include:
  • Perform animal husbandry tasks and maintenance for a collection of live reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, mammals and aquatic species.
  • Support the animal care team in design and construction of new animal habitats.
  • Assist in documentation of the health and care of animals and the ongoing review and refinement of care schedules and routines.
  • Monitor animal care and maintenance supply stocks. Recommend supply orders when needed.
  • Support the development and delivery of educational experiences and feature creature demonstrations using the collection.
  • Support educators in their use of ambassador animals in classroom experiences.

The expected salary for the Animal Care Assistant is $20.00/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • At least one year of undergraduate academic experience in biology or life sciences OR one year experience working with a collection of live animals in an academic or professional setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry requirements and techniques for small exotic animals.
  • Availability on weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with children in an informal science setting.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:
      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
