The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.

Under direction, the Assistant Environmental Engineer will act as a Project Manager, managing various engineering and construction projects from conceptual to completion for citywide BWSO-facilities.

Typical tasks will include.

Day-to-day field supervision activities for assign projects. Assists supervisor to develop scope of work, in-house estimates, negotiate costs and issue Job Orders. Participate in joint scope, pre-construction, and kick-off meetings. Responsible to achieve the Site-Specific Safety Work Plan approval via timely coordination between the contractors and DEP EH&S. Work closely with the Office Engineer updating submittal logs, collecting, reviewing, and confirming approval of all submittals in a timely fashion. Confirm all necessary permits are in place before mobilization. Act as the primary liaison between the bureau’s operative units, general contractors, sub-contractors and other facility representatives. Provide continuous technical inspections to ensure planned quality is being implemented on a day-to-day basis. Follow approved construction schedule and cost break down to ensure schedule and cost control. Work closely with the supervisor in reference to scope modifications and final quantity reconciliations. Prepare daily field technical reports and computations; collect and document initial, progress and final photos. Conduct substantial and final inspections in conjunction with the supervisor and opening unit’s designated repetitive. Issue official Punch lists and substantial completion memo upon completion of Punch lists. Collect all required administrative close-out documents in a timely fashion, review with supervisor for final acceptance. Assist supervisor and Office Engineer in partial and final payment processing.

At the time of appointment to certain positions, candidates may be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. If required, employees must maintain this license for the duration of employment.

Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work; or

  2. A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials

engineering from an accredited college and master’s degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college.

A master's degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in environmental engineering.
