Job Description
Exciting Opportunity at MSK!Dr Miltiadous (pediatric microbiome program) is searching for an outstanding computational scientist with a strong interest in developing and applying bioinformatic/quantitative methods to problems in microbiota/metagenomics, cancer biology, immunology, and bone marrow transplantation. The ideal candidate will have strong statistical and programming skills, an interest in the microbiome, immunology, and cancer, enjoy working with an interdisciplinary team, and bring intellectual and analytical rigor to the projects.
The computational biologist will play a vital role in advancing the pediatric microbiome research program, which aims to unravel microbiota-host interactions in pediatric cancer patients and recipients of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The role will involve analyzing and developing new computational approaches to interrogate a large dataset of over 2,500 microbiota samples from more than 600 pediatric patients, integrated with comprehensive clinical metadata and immunophenotyping data. Ongoing mouse experiments will also benefit from the candidate’s expertise in microbiota analysis. Most of these samples have already been sequenced using 16S rRNA and/or shotgun metagenomics.
Role Overview:
· Pre-process samples sequenced by 16S and/or shotgun metagenomic sequencing
· Develop and run computational pipelines for analyzing microbiome data.
· Analyze datasets to uncover microbiome taxonomic and functional differences in patient sub-cohorts.
· Evaluate the performance of novel technology platforms, assays, and tools.
· Develop, refine, and enhance bioinformatics tools for interpreting large microbiome datasets.
· Evaluate and test third-party software packages.
· Maintain detailed records of all analyses.
· Present results and updates at lab meetings and to collaborators.
· Attend seminars, lectures, and training courses to enhance computational biology skills and stay current in the field of microbiome.
Key Qualifications:
· Masters or a PhD with 2+ years of work experience.
· 2+ years of experience in microbiome analysis.
· Strong analytical skills with a cross-disciplinary approach.
· Fluency in Python and R is required.
Core Skills:
· Expertise in bioinformatics tools and techniques.
· Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
· Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment.
