MetLife Director, Tax Actuary in New York, New York

The Opportunity

This position is primarily responsible for ensuring that the actuarial components of MetLife's federal tax computation are consistent with federal law and that MetLife products meet actuarial related tax requirements in order to maintain favorable tax treatment for MetLife. This position is also responsible for ensuring that valuation and pricing analyses associated with reinsurance, embedded value, cash flow testing and other projects appropriately reflect the impact of taxes from an actuarial perspective and tax accounting perspective. You will have the opportunity to work closely with different departments, including finance, legal, and actuarial, providing a holistic view of the company's operations and enhancing your professional growth.

Principal Responsibilities of Position:

  • Company Tax Issues -

  • *

Ensure that the actuarial components of MetLife's US federal tax computation are consistent with federal tax law for both U.S. entities and foreign entities (where needed)

  • Analyze actuarial aspects of current and newly issued tax law, regulations and rulings

  • *

Develop and implement approaches to ensure laws and regulations are reflecting in the actuarial components including reserves, DAC tax, and reinsurance elements, including both Life and P&C.

  • Support IRS audits of federal tax returns.

  • *

Liaise with MetLife's internal and external auditors.

  • Provide support for preparing and reviewing actuarial elements for inclusion in the Company's tax return and financial statements.

  • *

Product Tax Issues -

  • Ensure that proposed products, or product enhancements, meet actuarial related tax requirements in order to maintain favorable tax treatment for MetLife e.g., efficient tax reserves. Requires close working relationship with the tax section of the Legal Department as well as the line of business actuaries.

Reinsurance Activity -

  • Ensure that reinsurance valuation and pricing analyses appropriately reflect the impact of taxes from an actuarial perspective and tax accounting perspective. This includes responsibility for developing accurate models for tax costs associated with actuarial reserves and the DAC tax, as well as assessing the financial impact of various transaction/reinsurance structures.

Tax Actuarial Adjustment and Reporting Reviews

  • Submissions for US Tax Returns related to actuarial changes

  • *

Submissions for GAAP and STAT reporting

  • Submissions for STAT projections

  • *

Submissions for Embedded Value

  • Submissions for Cash flow testing

  • *

Other responsibilities -

  • Support actuarial related tax aspects of various projects:

  • *

Represent MetLife on various industry groups

  • Assess impacts of tax reform for actuarial related changes

  • *

Function as the insurance subject matter expert for the Corporate Tax Department

  • Trainings provided to tax department on actuarial related topics

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications)

  • Minimum 8 years actuarial experience.

  • *

ASA required (FSA preferred) with a varied actuarial experience.

  • Experience with reinsurance.

  • *

Broad actuarial experience with financial reporting, financial projections, reserves, pricing and product development.

  • Collaborative approach to work; a team player. Work with teams within tax and within finance.

  • *

Very strong oral and written communications skills; ability to communicate actuarial related tax concepts to clients with various backgrounds and knowledge levels.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills; a self-starter.

  • *

Comfortable with assignments involving independent research.

  • Prior exposure to corporate or policyholder tax work is a plus, even if not in the tax department (such as on pricing modeling)

  • *

Developing, mentoring and training of staff.
