Macmillan Executive Director of Art, Flatiron in New York, New York

Description

Flatiron Books is looking for an Executive Director of Art with a passion for a broad range of books and book cover design. The ideal candidate has a strong background in art, design, layout and typography and can both produce original art concepts and art direct across various categories in fiction and nonfiction. This role requires strong communication and project management skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders.

What you'll do:

  • Design and art direct book jackets and covers for a wide array of exciting fiction and non-fiction titles. Categories include (but are not limited to) literary fiction, commercial fiction, mysteries and thrillers, celebrity memories, self-help, and cookbooks.

  • Assign and oversee work from staff and freelance designers, illustrators, artists, and photographers.

  • Work collaboratively with editorial, managing editorial and production teams, and evaluate and improve processes for greater efficiency.

  • Prepare and review jacket files for press.

  • Art direct photo shoots, as needed.

  • Adhere to deadlines and budgets.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Flatiron staff and outside contacts.

What you'll bring:

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders.

  • A strong design skillset, including proficiency in typography, image creation and manipulation, and image research/photo editing.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop.

  • Ideal candidate must be familiar with the adult trade market.

  • The ability to take in feedback from multiple sources and come up with creative solutions.

  • Excellent project management skills, extremely well organized, able to manage many projects simultaneously.

Ideal experience/education:

  • At least 7 years of design experience in book publishing, or equivalent print media (magazine, newspaper, etc.)

  • At least 2-3 years of art directing and managing designers.

  • Proficiency with the technological and production aspects of print media.

This role will have an annual salary of $170,000 - $185,000.
