The Fixed Income Division (FID) is comprised of Interest Rate and Currency Products, Corporate Credit, Muni Products, and Securitized Product Group. Professionals in the Division assess and actively manage risk, trade securities, and structure as well as execute innovative transactions in the fast-paced and constantly changing global markets. Job Description:

Electronic trading: using computer software and advanced mathematics to make money by trading bonds.

This job focuses on building algorithms to trade municipal bonds. The challenge? Build a stable system that process GB of real time data to arrive at the fair price for .5 million different bonds. Imagine it like this…you operate an art gallery and you’re not sure what any painting is worth. Some artists sell for thousands and other just hundreds. If you’ve just sold a painting, how to translate that sale into the value of other paintings for the same artist, similar artist and then to the art market as a whole?

The job involves building statistical models for bond trading which requires knowledge of probability, statistics, and machine learning techniques. The candidate should be familiar, with a few techniques such as generalized linear models, SVM, hidden Markov models, random forest and/or expectation maximization.

Candidates should good with either java and/or python, for how else are we going to make the algorithms work?

Desired Skills

• Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied mathematics or operations research
• Working knowledge of basic probability
• Experience with the statistical modelling of data
• Several years of programming experience: Java, Python and C

• Good sense of humor

Expected base pay rates for the role will be $1500,000 and $200,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
