The New School Handyperson in New York, New York

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the building Superintendent and/or the Assistant Director of Facilities, the handyperson is responsible for performing maintenance tasks in an assigned building, or group of buildings. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between The New School and Local 32BJ- SEIU .

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain all HVAC equipment

  • Daily inspection of all building systems and premises

  • Completion of all assigned work order requests

  • Assure that all work areas are kept in clean and safe manner

  • Perform diagnostic and routine maintenance

  • Perform preventive maintenance according to departmental standards

  • Perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs

  • Perform basic carpentry work and hardware repair

  • Perform sheetrock repair – plaster and painting

  • Familiarity with all plumbing shut off valves and electrical panels

  • Cooperate with all DOB , DEP , and FDNY inspectors.

  • Collect trash and re-cycle materials from offices, corridors, restrooms, and all academic spaces. Movement of trash to holding areas and placement outside in designated locations for removal by sanitation/recycle trucks.

  • Movement of heavy items such as furniture, supplies, equipment, etc.

  • Report any items within the building, or on the exterior, that require repair.

  • Sweep and clean sidewalks – shovel snow as directed

  • Perform room setups (chairs, tables, furniture, etc.) for meetings, classes, and events, ass assigned

  • Perform related duties, as assigned.

Work Mode

  • On-Campus Position – Employees in this position are expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours due to the nature of the work being that which is not feasible, or not in the best interest of the organization, to be performed remotely.

Hourly Rate

$32.452

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in maintenance and/or building operations

  • Familiarity and proficiency with basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks

  • Ability to read, write and communicate with co-workers and the University community, in English

  • Commitment to customer service and improving the campus environment.

  • Ability to apply for, and hold, various DOB and/or FDNY licenses/certifications, as required

  • Available to work weekends and overtime when necessary

  • Ability to adhere to University COVID -19 policy and protocols.
