Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic Journalism Education Editor with newsroom experience to help us start an exciting partnership with academic partners, beginning with the School of the New York Times. This role will be key in understanding and determining the framework in which this program may grow.

This is a one-year temporary position.

Responsibilities:

  • You will work with the newsroom early careers team and other key stakeholders to help create the school’s journalism curriculum and standards. This includes suggesting, consulting on and executing possible program-related changes at the school.

  • Create new ways to identify and further develop budding talent, assessing how to best measure the program’s effectiveness with metrics, and working with the team on other related endeavors.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of ourvalue of journalistic independence (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • Pitching in on other adjacent early-careers related tasks as needed, such as talent evaluation for our early career programs.

  • You will report to Theodore Kim, director of career programs in the newsroom.

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least five years of experience as a working journalist in the industry.

  • Experience working with up-and-coming journalists through mentorships, organized programs, training sessions or through other avenues.

  • Demonstrated experience managing programs or large projects, involving early career journalists.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A profound understanding of the broad challenges facing journalism and its talent pipeline.

  • An ability to collaborate with stakeholders on multiple teams, to do long-term planning and to delegate when needed.

  • An ability to regularly bring innovative ideas to the table.

  • A deep empathy for young journalists and the ability to guide and mentor with a high level of integrity — all the while adhering to the mission and values of The New York Times.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $130,000.00 and $140,000.00.
