The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Laboratory Manager of Makerspace manages the day-to-day operations of Makerspace @ Columbia; maintains machines and equipment maintenance schedules and requests requisitions as needed; manages staff of lab technicians and student workers; creates educational programming and workshops; provides machining and technical safety support to students, staff, and faculty of CU; manages project orders for machining and printing; creates safety trainings and protocols; develops workshops; maintains social media presence; purchasing for Makerspace equipment and materials; manages operating budget.

Responsibilities

  • (20%) Managing supporting roles in the lab spaces including full-time staff, superusers, and student casuals.
  • (20%) Oversees equipment operations as the safety point of contact for equipment including laser cutters, 3D printers, and machines within the woodshop and machine shops. Maintains equipment maintenance schedules, and requests requisitions as needed for service work.
  • (15%) Managing students in the design and implementation of research and class projects, as well as personal projects for any staff, students and/or faculty within CU, and ENG Student Clubs (i.e. CSI, FSAE, CURC, AIAA).
  • (15%) Maintaining and update Makerspace inventories and ordering replacement supplies as well as coordinating billing for lab materials and approving transactions; manage budgets and participate in budget planning and forecasting.
  • (10%) Developing educational workshops and upholding a social media presence.
  • (10%) Overseeing Makerspace usage for classes and research; overseeing organization and storage.
  • (5%) Serving on committees regarding lab safety and coordination, and other committees as requested.
  • (5%) Performing other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area such as engineering, sciences, architecture, or related field.

  • A minimum of three years of related experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in working with undergraduate students.

  • Experience in mechanical/electronic hardware projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience running and operating a makerspace-like facility.
  • Experience operating desktop fabrication equipment, such as 3D Printers, laser
    cutters, and CNC machines.
