How will you make an impact in this role?

American Express has a network that connects millions of consumers, merchants, and businesses around the globe in a payments and commerce ecosystem that creates value for all its constituents. Our Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) Risk Management Team stands behind each of these purchases, thus protecting this network of millions of consumers and merchants.

The Manager will join a team responsible for overseeing a portfolio with exposure of over $5 Billion. You will be a Regional Risk Officer on the front line, protecting the merchant business P&L from loss, while carefully balancing the merchant relationship with American Express. The Manager must have sound judgment, excellent communication skills, be analytical, motivated and be a strategic thinker, who can dive into numeric financial details and understand the business models of companies operating in different industries e.g. travel, retail, etc. while still being able to conduct negotiations with C-Suite executives. Our team members are multitalented who are self-directed and make decisions that have high stake profitability and risk tradeoffs. Additionally, our team plays a central role in both the GMNS and Risk organizations by collaborating with client managers, credit rating team members and supporting various Risk Committees across the enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • This exciting role will be responsible for verifying exposures through financials, business model/KYC review, data analysis, calls with merchants and client managers, and review of other external resources.

  • Working with internal partners to source financial information, create review cases, work with Client Managers, support escalations from internal Credit and Fraud Teams, and make risk mitigation decisions.

  • Working on special projects when needed, the ability to prepare presentations for upper management, pull data to support ad hoc projects, and other industry specific risk initiatives.

  • Prioritizing a portion of a portfolio of high-risk merchants with billions of dollars in credit exposure, proactively managing challenging negotiations with C-Suites, and influencing internal stakeholders to gain alignment on a timeline to take action with our merchants.

  • Partner with Acquisition, Relationship Management, Compliance, Collections, Operations and External Agencies to implement risk mitigation strategies.

  • In addition, by being close to the fundamental metrics that drive profitability and RoEC (Return on Economic Capital), the you will have opportunities to drive projects to help AXP win in the marketplace.

  • This role includes in-depth analytics, developing and monitoring key credit metrics, designing risk mitigation strategies and customer facing negotiations that will strengthen American Express’s competitive advantage and brand promise in the market.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous Merchant Acquiring Risk or Commercial Credit Underwriting experience throughout multiple industries.

  • Strong financial and analytical acumen, financial credit and/or accounting knowledge, comfort with financial statements.

  • Ability to manage a sizeable portfolio of merchants in an organized manner with a sense of urgency

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with previous experience within a client facing role with C-Level executives.

  • Ability to confidently present complex credit metrics to C-Suites as well as internal AMEX leadership

  • Demonstrated relationship building skills and experience managing multiple stakeholders

  • Creative thinker who thrives on finding unique solutions, particularly in workout/mitigation scenarios, which enable all parties to “win”

  • Knowledge of SQL, Teradata, SAS, Python and/or other coding programs or a commitment to learn

  • Expertise in all MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, Certification or equivalent work experience preferred.

  • Contract negotiation skills

  • Understanding of US Bankruptcy Law and Preference Period Risk

  • Microsoft Power Bi, Tableau and/or other dashboard building experience

Qualifications

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually bonus benefits
